Henry Phelan

Phelan was named the assistant coach of cross country and track and field in January 2020 and begins his first indoor track and field and outdoor track and field season. 

Phelan comes to Assumption with 22 years of coaching experience between the high school and college levels. Most recently, Phelan worked as an assistant coach at Towson University where he coached women’s distance runners. During his two years at Towson, he coached individuals to set five new school records and set several all-time top ten performances along with a Junior National and ECAC individual and relay team qualifiers. Phelan also coached the first All-Region performer in Cross Country in 2019.

Prior to working at Towson, from 2016 to 2017 Phelan worked as an assistant coach at Harvard University. At Harvard, he worked directly with the men’s distance runners and coached two NCAA East Regional qualifiers. He was involved in the day to day operations with the team including training programs, meet planning and travel.

From 2008 to 2016, Phelan worked as the head coach of girls’ and boys’ cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field teams at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School. In his eight years, he coached a girls’ Division I State Championship Cross Country team in 2009 and four State runner-up teams in 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2015. In girls’ indoor track and field, Phelan led the team to All-State Champions in 2016, All-State Runner-Up in 2012 and Division I State Runner-Up in 2012 and 2016. For girls’ outdoor track, Phelan coached ten individual All-State Champions and six All-State 4x800 relay Champions. Phelan coached a boys’ indoor track All-State Champion and a 4x800 relay outdoor track boys’ All-State Champion team.

Phelan ran cross country at Keene State College for four years and was an All New England and NCAA Division III All-American.
