Bumpus Leads Hounds To 41-10 Road Win at Pace

Box Score

Pleasantville, N.Y. (October 8) -- Freshman quarterback Kevin Bumpus (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) passed for one touchdown and ran for a pair as the Assumption College football team cruised to a 41-10 victory over Pace University on Saturday afternoon at Setter Field. The win is the third straight in the all-time series for Assumption and snaps an overall three-game losing streak.

Assumption took advantage of a Pace fumble to start the game and marched down the field with a five-play, 42-yard drive for the early 6-0 lead. Capping the drive was a five-yard touchdown run up the middle by Matt Tuleja (Mansfield, Mass./Xaverian).

For the second straight week, sophomore Mike Bates (Holden, Mass./Wachusett) returned an interception for a touchdown as he picked off Pace quarterback Jordan Raynor and took it back 41 yards for the 13-0 lead just four minutes into the game. In the opening seconds of the second quarter, Sam Previte (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) capped a 13-play 84-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run and the commanding 20-0 lead. Pace ended the half with 10 unanswered points though as Patrick Lupfer pulled in a 36-yard touchdown pass and Ali Mortada drilled a 41-yard field goal.

The Hounds extended the lead midway thru the third quarter as Bumpus rumbled in from three yards out to get the lead to 27-10. Bumpus and Assumption closed out the third-quarter scoring as Bumpus rolled to his left and found a wide-open Scott Simonson (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) in the end zone for the touchdown and the 34-10 advantage.

Bumpus continued to shine early in the fourth as he went untouched up the middle for an 18-yard touchdown to account for the 41-10 final score.

For the game, Bumpus completed 8-of-12 pass attempts for 94 yards and a touchdown, along with 154 rushing yards on 20 attempts with two touchdowns. Previte nearly gained 100 yards as well, finishing the game with 90 yards on 16 attempts. Six different Greyhound receivers caught passes, led by four catches for 43 yards from Paul Perez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian).

Defensively it was senior standout Nick DiAntonio (Milford, Mass./Milford) who again led the team in tackles with nine stops, including one sack for a loss of three yards. The Hounds got to the Pace quarterback eight times for a loss of 48 yards, along with two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Junior Nick Haag (Grafton, Mass./Holy Name) and sophomore Matt Parowski (Washington, N.J./Bergen Catholic) led the Hounds with two sacks each.

For Pace, Raynor was 24-for-37 passing for 253 yards and one touchdown, while Lupfer caught six passes for 68 yards. David Lopez led the defense with a game-high 15 tackles, along with 13 stops by Vince Romano.

With the win, Assumption improves to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in Northeast-10 play, while Pace falls to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the league. The Greyhounds are back in action on Friday, October 14 as the team plays host to Merrimack for a 7 p.m. start under the lights at the Multi-Sport Stadium.
