FOXBORO, Mass. (November 19) --The Assumption men's ice hockey team dealt Northeast-10 Conference foe Stonehill, a 4-2 setback by Assumption College on Saturday afternoon at the Foxboro Sports Center.
Senior goaltender Nick Blanchette (Stuart, Fla./Worcester Academy) was the difference in the victory for the Greyhounds making 48 saves including a game-high 21 in the second period. Chris Tasiopoulos turned away 32 shots on net for Stonehill.
Assumption took an early 1-0 lead just 2:35 into the first as sophomore forward Nick Mattiello (Johnston, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) beat Tasiopoulos five-hole on a breakaway opportunity for his fourth goal of the season.
Junior forward Christopher Gorovitz responded for the Skyhawks at 3:50 putting home a rebound past Blanchette to the score at 1-1. Senior forward Patrick Greene and sophomore forward Bill Carey were credited with assists on Gorovitz' third tally of the year.
Senior defenseman Matthew Doherty gave Stonehill its first lead of the contest at the 14:02 mark from the left faceoff dot into the top left corner of the net for a 2-1 advantage and his second marker of the season.
In the second period, Assumption scored two unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead before the break. Freshman forward Brennen Shaw (Presque Isle, Maine/Brewster Academy) evened the score, 2-2, at 2:46 wristing a shot into the back of the net off of Tasiopoulos' blocker for his second goal of the year. Jaime Vona (West Seneca, N.Y./Saint Francis) was credited with the assist. At 6:25, sophomore forward Mike Heyde (Natick, Mass./Natick), who was stationed in the slot, redirected a shot from the point behind Tasiopoulos putting the Greyhounds ahead, 3-2. Freshman defenseman Ryan Sargent (Barnstead, N.H./Prospect Mountain) and Shaw received assists on Heyde's first marker of the season.
Sophomore forward Ross White (Uxbridge, Mass./Uxbridge) added an empty net goal at 19:34 of the third period firing a shot from Assumption's defensive zone into the net to seal the victory, with Taylor Larsen (Blackstone, Mass./Worcester Academy) picking up the assist.
Stonehill (2-5-0, 1-1-0 NE-10) hosts Wentworth in non-conference action on Tuesday, November 22 at 7 p.m. Assumption (3-3-1, 1-0-0 NE-10) hosts Saint Michael's in a NE-10 matchup on Tuesday at 6:05 p.m.
