Box Score Waltham, Mass. (November 5) -- Assumption had its three-game winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon in a high-scoring affair as Bentley defeated the Greyhounds by a 41-26 final at Bentley Field. The Hounds rallied to within two points midway thru the fourth quarter before the Falcons pulled away for the victory.
The Hounds jumped on top just 3:19 into the first quarter as sophomore Matt Pedone (Holden, Mass./Wachusett) bolted 70 yards up the near sideline for the early 7-0 lead. Bentley answered in a busy second quarter though as Bobby Tarr (Byfield, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) took the ball on a draw play and raced 76 yards up the middle to tie things up at 7-7. The Falcons took the lead with 3:37 left on a 38-yard touchdown catch on the fingertips of Bill Kiley (Quincy, Mass./Boston College) and added to the lead with a seven-yard scoring pass to Mike Sumrell (Dorchester, Mass./Belmont) just inside the left corner of the end zone.
On the ensuing drive, the Hounds used a 29-yard run by Pedone and a 27-yard reception by Ben Kiley (Newton, Mass./Suffield Academy) to get into field goal position at the 15-yard line. As time expired, senior Brian Nowak (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) knocked a 32-yarder thru the uprights as the Falcons took a 21-10 lead into the break. Pedone picked up 129 yards in the first half, while Tarr gained 117 yards on the ground in the half for the Falcons.
Neither team scored in a slow beginning to the third quarter before the Hounds struck on a 24-yard field goal from Nowak with 4:52 left in the period. The score was set up by a 45-yard interception return to the Bentley nine yard line by senior Pat Jordan (Marlton, N.J./St. Joseph's Prep). Bentley answered back almost immediately as wide receiver Wade Critides (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) got into the open past the Greyhound defense and hauled in a 41-yard pass from Bryant Johnson (Hopedale, Mass./Milford) for the 28-13 lead.
Assumption closed out the third quarter on a strong note as the Hounds marched the ball down the field with a nine-play, 69-yard drive that was capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass over the top to Kiley to pull within 28-20 heading to the fourth. After an empty drive for the Falcons, the Greyhounds came right back with an 11-play, 63-yard scoring drive to get within 28-26 with 9:29 remaining. After a 36-yard pass to Paul Perez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) gave the Hounds the ball at the 13-yard line, Assumption got the ball down to the three yard line for a first and goal. The Falcons held the Hounds to get to fourth and goal from the two before Homiski found Scott Simonson (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) for a leaping touchdown grab to get the Hounds within two. The two-point conversion failed however, leaving the visitors trailing by two points with under 10 minutes left in the game.
Just over one minute later, the high-scoring quarter continued as a 43-yard pass to Bentley's Kiley gave the Falcons the ball at the Assumption 19-yard line. On the next play, Johnson dodged his way up the middle from 19 yards out to stretch the lead back to 35-26 with 8:01 left. On the next Assumption drive, Taylor Tavarozzi picked off Homiski on the near sideline and took it 60 yards to the end zone to account for the 41-26 final after the extra point was blocked.
Pedone finished the game with a career-high 173 yards on 20 carries, while Perez pulled in eight passes for 128 yards. Senior Dan Conrad (Holden, Mass./St. Peter Marian) led the Hounds with eight tackles on the day.
With the loss, Assumption falls to 4-5 overall and 3-4 in the league, while Bentley finishes its season at 6-4 overall and 5-3 in league play.
The Hounds close out the 2011 season on Saturday, November 12 as Assumption plays host to Stonehill for a 1 p.m. start at the Multi-Sport Stadium. Prior to the game, the Assumption Senior Class will be recognized for their contributions to the program during their careers.
