Worcester, Mass. (September 17) -- The Assumption field hockey team dropped Saint Michaels College, 2-1, behind an overtime goal by freshman forward Paige Anderson (Suffield, Conn./Suffield).

"Paige stepped up in a major way today," head coach Annie Lahey (Holy Cross '02) said. "It all clicked for her. She was exploding to the ball, knowing she could beat her defender with her speed."

The Hounds jumped out to a lead in the 13th minute behind a goal by sophomore Bethany Rocha (Lakeville, Mass./Bishop Stang) off a corner. Sophomore Kylie Zurn (South Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) and Amanda Whaley (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) assisted the goal.

According to Lahey, Whaley stabilized the team from her midfield position.

"She is our rock," Lahey said. "She controlled the field very well."

Following the goal, the Hounds continued to attack, and produced opportunities to score. In the first half alone, the Hounds attempted six shots and some of it was due to moving players around the field.

In the second half, Saint Michael's knotted the score up. In the 57th minute, Taylor Wahrenbrock scored a goal, assisted by Kelly Celata to tie the score at one.

The Hounds kept battling, and produced five more shots in the second half, but couldn't score, and the game went to overtime.

Four minutes into the overtime period, Anderson provided the heroics. Senior Catie Lopes (Needham, Mass./Needham) assisted the goal.

The defense, which only allowed one goal, was anchored by senior captain Hannah Sherrill (Holden, Mass./Notre Dame).

"Hannah made some great plays back there today," Lahey said. "She broke up a number of their attacks."

With the win, the Hounds move to 1-4 on the season and 1-1 in the Northeast-10. Saint Michael's College drops to 0-7 on the season and 0-1 in the Northeast-10.

The Hounds hit the field next against Bentley on September 20 at 7:00 p.m. in Waltham, Mass.
