Bowden Sets School Record With 69 Saves in 3-2 Win

Worcester, Mass. (January 25) -- Sophomore goaltender Bobby Bowden (Springfield, Mass./Williston Northampton) broke a 40-year-old school record with a 69-save performance in a 3-2 victory over Northeast-10 Conference opponent Stonehill College at the Buffone Arena on Wednesday night.

Assumption goaltender Larry Thomas set the previous record with a 68-save outing against Worcester Polytecnic Institute in 1972.

Bowden turned away 29-of-30 shots in the first period, as Stonehill took a 1-0 lead after one period on a shorthanded goal by Kevin Aufiero.

Assumption answered with a goal  by Taylor Larsen (Blackstone, Mass./Worcester Academy) with 8:05 to play in the second period, assisted by Mike Janson (Ridgewood, N.J./Bergen Catholic). The Ice Dogs added a second goal to take a 2-1 lead less than a minute later when junior Joe Fimiani (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) scored an unassisted goal. The Ice Dogs would not relinquish that lead.

Sophomore Kyle Zobler (Millbury, Mass./New Hampton) netted his second goal of the season in the third period to extend the Ice Dog lead to two, 3-1. Larsen and senior forward Pat O'Kane (Hollis, N.H./Bishop Guertin) assisted the goal. The point gave O'Kane 100 points in his career, becoming the 34th person in school history to reach that milestone, while with Larsen's two points in the game, give him 127 on his career, moving the senior into sole possession of 15th on the all-time list.

Garrett Lessard provided a power play goal for the Skyhawks in the third period, to cut the lead to one but the game would not get any closer than that.

Bowden picked up the victory to move to 6-2-1, while Assumption moves to 9-7-1 overall with the win, while Stonehill falls to 5-8-2. Bowden turned away 29 shots in the first period, 17 in the second period, and 23 in the third period for the record, while freshman goaltender Chris Tasiopoulos made 28 saves for the Skyhawks in the loss.

The Ice Dogs return to play on Saturday, January 28th, when the team travels to Franklin Pierce to take on the Ravens in Northeast-10 Conference action. The game will start at 7:30 p.m.
