Box Score New Haven, Conn. (October 17) -- The Assumption College men's soccer team defeated the University of New Haven Chargers, 2-1, at Arcadio Rodriguez Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Greyhounds improve to 4-7-1 overall and 3-6-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play, while the Chargers fall to 5-8-1 and 2-7-1 in league play.
Assumption got on the board first as sophomore Troy Lamagna (South Glastonbury, Conn. / Glastonbury) beat three defenders and scored from about eight yards out at the 15:10 mark in the first half.
The Greyhounds extended the lead to two as Michael Agbortoko (Beau, Cameroon / Southbridge) notched his fourth goal of the season as he recovered a loose ball off a deep throw in. The goal came at the 67:37 mark in the game.
New Haven attempted to come back, as Clancy Purcell converted a direct kick from 23 yards out in the 81st minute, but freshman Dana King (Windham, Maine/Windham) and the defense shut down the Charger attack and held on for the 2-1 win.
King made four saves while allowing the one goal to pick up the win. The Greyhounds out shot New Haven, 9-7, but the Chargers bested Assumption in corner kicks by a 4-2 margin.
The Greyhounds will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 20 against Franklin Pierce University. The match will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Multi-Sport Stadium in Worcester, Mass.
