Hounds Cruise Past Owls for 44-0 Victory

Box Score

New Haven, Conn. (October 19) -- Assumption jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead in the first quarter and was never threatened as the Hounds snapped a four-game losing streak with a 44-0 shutout victory over Southern Connecticut on Friday night at Jess Dow Field. The game is the 11th all-time meeting between the two teams and the first Assumption victory over the Owls.

Midway thru the first quarter, the Hounds forced a punt from the SCSU end zone that was returned deep into Owl territory. However, a 15-yard personal foul penalty pushed the Hounds back to the Owl 41-yard line to start the drive. With the drive stalling, junior quarterback Bobby Jordan (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) converted a long third down play as he ran for the first down and into the red zone. Three plays later, Jordan capped off the drive with a six-yard touchdown run for his second rushing score of the season and the 7-0 lead with 5:31 left in the first period.

On the ensuing drive, SCSU quarterback Bobby Lippincott had the ball snapped over his head and as he reached for it, Assumption's Matt Colangelo (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) recovered the ball at the one-yard line. On the next play, Jordan rumbled in up the middle on the quarterback sneak for the 14-0 lead.

Lippincott fumbled just moments later on the next drive as Khalid Pitts (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) recovered the ball at the seven-yard line to give the Hounds great field position. On third down and goal, Adam Gruschow (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) went in motion and took the handoff from Jordan, running to the far corner of the end zone for his first rushing score of the season and a 21-0 lead with 2:11 on the clock.

Midway thru the second quarter, the Hounds added to the lead after another Owl turnover as Devon Barrett (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) recovered a fumble in the end zone to make it a 28-0 margin with 7:08 left in the first half. On the next possession, Assumption's Dan Conrad (Holden, Mass./St. Peter-Marian) recovered another Owl fumble at the 20-yard with 5:43 left in the half. A 16-yard reception by Gruschow to the left made it a first and goal for the Hounds, but Assumption was unable to convert that into points as the game headed into halftime at 28-0.

In the opening half, the Hounds outgained the Owls in total yards by a 166 to negative-13 yard margin.

In the third, the Hounds added a 24-yard field goal from Beuchert and a 28-yard touchdown run from sophomore Matt Heriveaux (Everett, Mass./Malden Catholic) to extend the lead to 38-0 with five minutes left in the third.

With 10:16 left in the game, junior Quint Preston (Tampa, Fla./Robinson) scooped up another Southern Connecticut fumble and rumbled 78 yards for the touchdown and a 44-0 lead after the extra-point attempt was blocked. Preston's play is the longest fumble recovery for a touchdown in Assumption history.

The Hounds outgained the Owls by a 281-34 margin on the ground, led by a 110-yard effort from senior Uly Gibson (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North). Barrett led the Hounds with nine total tackles, while Conrad had a pair of fumble recoveries. Junior Mike Stuppiello (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) added a pair of sacks in the win and ranks among the league leaders in that category.

With the win, the Hounds improve to 2-5 overall and 2-4 in Northeast-10 play, while the Owls fall to 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the league.

Assumption is back in action on Saturday, October 27th as the Hounds host Pace University for a 1 p.m. start. Prior to the start game, the Hounds will honor this year's Senior Class for their contributions to the program during their career.
