Hounds Pull Away for 59-31 Senior Day Win

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. (October 27) -- Led by a season-best three-touchdown afternoon from senior running back Uly Gibson (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North), the Assumption College football team pulled away for a high-scoring 59-31 home win over visiting Pace University on Senior Day. The Hounds have now won four straight over the Setters. Prior to the start of the game, the Hounds recognized 13 seniors who were playing in their final regular-season home game.

On the first possession for Assumption, sophomore Eddy Frazier (Worcester, Mass./Burncoat) pulled down a 38-yard pass across the middle for his first career touchdown reception and the 7-0 lead just 2:36 into the game. The scoring pass was the first of three on the afternoon for junior quarterback Bobby Jordan (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell), who finished 9-for-15 passing for 258 yards and three touchdowns.

Just three and a half minutes later, the Hounds added to the lead when junior tight end Scott Simonson (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) hauled in a pass from Jordan down the far sideline, fought off a number of tacklers and found his way into the end zone for a 75-yard touchdown reception and a 14-0 edge. Pace answered three minutes later though as Jordan Raynor found Patrick Lupfer for a 31-yard scoring strike to make it a 14-7 score just 9:17 into the game.

Gibson closed out the first-quarter scoring though on a five-yard touchdown run up the middle to cap a 10-play, 77-yard drive and make it a 21-7 score after one period. Gibson added to the lead with a 27-yard scoring run to open the second and the game appeared to be firmly in control for Assumption with a 21-point lead.

The Setters had different ideas though and after a five-yard touchdown run by Blair Wynn and a 12-yard TD catch by Lupfer, the deficit was just 28-21 with 4:31 to go in the opening half. The two teams traded field goals over the remainder of the period and the game headed into the halftime break at 31-24 in favor of the Hounds.

The third quarter was all Assumption as sophomore Kyle Jamerson (Georgetown, Mass./Pingree School) pulled down his first career touchdown with a 21-yard catch, followed by the third Gibson score to increase the margin to 45-24 after three quarters.

Senior Nick Bolio (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) scored his second touchdown of the season to open the fourth, running 29 yards up the middle to cap a five-play, 62-yard drive that took just 1:39 off the clock. After a third Lupfer touchdown catch of the day for the Setters with 9:34 left, sophomore Matt Heriveaux (Everett, Mass./Malden Catholic) went 17 yards up the middle for his second touchdown in as many weeks to close out the scoring in the 59-31 shootout.

Gibson tied a career high with his three-touchdown effort as he finished with 15 rushes for 111 yards. Bolio made his final regular-season home game a memorable one as he rushed for a career-high 124 yards on 15 carries with a touchdown.  Frazier led the Hounds with three catches for 88 yards, including his 38-yard scoring grab.

Junior kicker Tad Beuchert (Danvers, Mass./Saint John's Prep), the two-time Northeast-10 Special Teams Player of the Week, posted his third double-digit scoring game as he converted a 22-yard field goal and was 8-for-8 in extra-point attempts for an 11-point afternoon.

Defensively, senior safety Sonny Dillinger (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) led the Hounds with 10 tackles, along with one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one pass breakup.

Pace was led by Raynor, who completed 22-of-41 passes for 328 yards and three touchdowns, while Lupfer had 10 catches for 156 yards and three scores. Matt Tarpley also had a 100-yard afternoon, making eight catches.

For the Setters, the defense was led by 15 tackles from David Lopez and a 10-tackle showing by Vincent Romano.

Assumption improves to 3-5 overall and 3-4 in the Northeast-10, while Pace remains winless at 0-8 overall and 0-7 in league play.

The Hounds close out the regular season next Saturday as the team travels to Merrimack College for a 1 p.m. start in North Andover. An Assumption win in the regular-season finale would give the Hounds possession of fifth place a home game in the inaugural Northeast-10 Conference Championship Weekend, which will take place on Saturday, November 10th at Noon.
