Box Score Worcester, Mass. (October 9) -- Junior Brian Ayers scored early in the second overtime as Saint Anselm pulled out a 1-0 double-overtime win over Assumption on Tuesday evening in Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer action at the Multi-Sport Stadium.
Neither team managed many chances in the first half of play as the teams combined for just two shots on goal in a scoreless half.
In the second half, the Hounds had some early chances, including a shot just wide by Jose Paulo (Sao Paulo, Brazil/LaSalle Academy) just over 10 minutes into the period. Assumption held a 3-1 edge in shots on goal in the half, but the Hounds headed into overtime for the fourth time in their last six games.
With just over three and a half minutes left in the first overtime, Dan Davis (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) took a crossing pass from Michael Agbortoko (Beau, Cameroon/Southbridge) and blasted a shot from 10 yards out. Saint Anselm goalie Eric Moriarty turned the shot aside though and the game headed into the second extra period.
Early in the second overtime, Brian Ayers tipped a curling shot from the left of the net past the diving goalie and just inside the far post for the game-winning score for Saint Anselm.
Freshman Dana King (Windham, Maine/Windham) made two saves for the Hounds, while Moriarty turned aside five shots for the Hawks.
With the loss, the Hounds fall to 3-6-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the Northeast-10, while Saint Anselm sits in fifth place in the league at 5-6-1 overall and 5-3 in league action.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, October 13th at 4 p.m. as the Hounds travel to North Andover, Mass. to take on Merrimack College in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup.
