Easton, Mass. (November 16) -- The Assumption College women's basketball team  outlasted Caldwell College with a 64-60 overtime victory at Merkert Gymasium on Friday night.

Katy Howard (Medway, Mass./Medway) broke a tie at 57 on a jumper with 3:01 remaining in overtime. Caldwell answered with a free throw, but Gabrielle Gibson (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague) made a layup on the fast break to extend the Greyhound lead to three, 61-58, with 1:11 to play in the extra period.

On the ensuing possession, the Greyhounds forced a shot clock violation. Howard hit a free throw to extend the lead to four, before Caldwell made its first field goal of overtime on a baseline jumper by Emily Caswell to cut the lead to two with 14 seconds to play.

The teams traded baskets through the first five minutes, before the Greyhounds struck with consecutive three's by Howard, giving Assumption a quick 6-0 spurt and a 13-10 lead.

The Cougars answered with a 6-0 spurt of their own, taking a 16-13 lead with 12:37 remaining in the half. After Assumption took an 18-16 lead, the Cougars engaged on an 8-0 run, using two three-pointers, and a layup, to gain a 24-18 lead, forcing the Greyhounds to call a timeout.

Coming out of the timeout, Marissa Velez (Barre, Vt./Spaulding) strung together eight consecutive points, giving the Greyhounds a 26-24 lead.

Trailing 28-26, Howard made five straight points for Assumption, giving the Greyhounds a three point lead, giving the Greyhounds a 31-30 lead.

Following a Cougar layup, Roy hit the Greyhounds eighth triple of the half for Assumption, and Courtney Donovan (Sagamore Beach, Mass./Bourne) made a layup, extending the lead to six, 36-30 at the half.

The Cougars started the second half on an 11-5 run to tie the game at 41 each with just more than 13 minutes to play.

A layup by Shannon Ray (Yonkers, N.Y./Ursuline Academy) broke up the 7-0 Cougar run, giving Assumption a 43-41 lead. Ray followed that up with a three-pointer and Gibson made a layup for Assumption to complete a Greyhounds seven-point charge.

Trailing 48-41, the Cougars made a 14-4 run, capped by a layup by Jeanette Anderson, giving Caldwell a 55-52 lead with 2:43 to play.

Sabrina Siciliano (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield-Warde) converted a layup to halt the run, cutting the Cougar lead to one with 1:35 to play.

Caswell made two free throws for Caldwell to extend the lead back to three. Gibson answered with two free throws for Assumption, trimming the lead back to one.

After a defensive stop, Gibson got fouled driving the lane. The senior missed the first free throw, but made the second one, tying the game at 57 with 14 seconds left in regulation.

Caswell missed a three-pointer at the buzzer, sending the game to overtime.

Howard had a team-high 14 points for Assumption, while Siciliano and Gibson each had 12 points for the Greyhounds. Junior Jamie Insel (Clinton, N.J./Voorhees) had a team-high seven rebounds, while Howard dished out five assists.

For Caldwell, Anderson led all scorers with 26 points on 12-of-18 shooting. She added 15 rebounds for a double-double.

The Greyhounds improve to 2-0 on the season with the victory, while Caldwell falls to 1-3 on the season. Assumption will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 17 against Goldey Beacom. The game will begin at 1:30 p.m. at Merkert Gymnasium in Easton, Mass.
