Providence, R.I. (November 20) -- The Assumption College ice hockey team dropped a 5-4 final to Johnson & Wales University on Tuesday evening.
The Wildcats won on a shorthanded third period goal by Danny Kaufman with 11:34 left to play in the game.
The teams traded goals in the first period, as the score was tied at two after one.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by freshman Alex Erban (Attleboro, Mass. / Mount Saint Charles), his second of the season, at the 1:25 mark in the first period. Trevor Plante (Blackstone, Mass. / Mt. St. Charles) assisted the goal.
The Wildcats answered with a goal of their own seven minutes later, as Josh Obregon found the back of the net.
Senior Keven Meehan (Melrose, Mass. / Austin Prep) put Assumption back on top for the final time in the game, 17 seconds after the Johnson & Wales goal, but the Wildcats knotted up the score at two with a goal at the 15:30 mark, keeping the teams even at the first intermission.
The Wildcats started out the second period with consecutive goals to jump out to a 4-2 lead in the first eight minutes of the second period. The Greyhounds stormed back in the second half of the period behind goals by Joe Fimiani (Arlington, Mass. / Arlington) and Plante. The score went into the final period tied at four, setting up Kaufman's heroics.
The Greyhounds fall to 1-7 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 2-4. Assumption will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 24 for the Worcester City Cup. The first game will be against Nichols College at the Levy Rink in Harrisville, R.I. The puck will drop at 5:40 p.m.
