-- Assumption College dropped a 3-2 final to
Nichols
College despite 38 saves by junior goaltender Bobby
Bowden (Springfield, Mass./Williston Northampton).
Senior Danny Greiner scored a pair of
goals including one with 2:17 left to help host Nichols claim third
place in the Worcester City Shootout for the second consecutive
season. With the win, Nichols improved to 5-2-0, while the
Greyhounds dipped to 1-9-0.
At the 16:09 mark in the third period the Bison were awarded a
penalty shot with the game knotted at 2-2. Nichols first-year
Tyler Beasley attempted the shot for the
hosts but Bowden made the stop to preserve the stalemate.
Less than two minutes later, Greiner deposited a rebound for the
game-winner, and his fifth goal of the year, at 17:43. The
alternate captain received help from sophomore Brett
Jackson, who registered his team-leading seventh assist,
and sophomore Mike O'Brien.
Nichols sophomore Mike Schwartz corralled
the puck behind the net and dished to first-year Tyler
Beasley as the Bison took a 1-0 lead at 6:56. Rookie
Paul Prescott also picked up an assist on the
marker. Senior Danny Greiner added another
tally for the Bison as he combined with Prescott and Schwartz to
score off the faceoff at the start of a power play at 18:27.
Nichols outshot the Greyhounds 11-6 as the Bison took advantage of
their extra man opportunity. Assumption went 0-for-1 with an
additional skater.
Sophomore Trevor
Plante (Blackstone, Mass./Mount Saint Charles)
deposited a rebound to put the Greyhounds on the board at 12:35 in
the second period. Sophomore Brennen Shaw
(Presque Isle, Maine/Brewster Academy) and freshman
Alex
Erban (East Haven, Conn./Mount Saint Charles) each
were credited with a helper on the tally. Later in the period,
junior Kyle Zobler
(Millbury, Mass./New Hampton) evened the game shortly
after a power play face off at 17:23 with aid from senior
Kevin Meehan (Melrose, Mass./Austin Prep) and
junior Ross White
(Uxbridge, Mass./Uxbridge). Assumption led the Bison 15-12
on shots in the frame as the visitors went 1-for-4 on the power
play while the Bison went 0-for-2.
For the game, Nichols outshot Assumption 41-36 and went 0-for-4
on the power play, while the visitors went 1-for-5 with extra
personnel.
Bison freshman goaltender Alex
Larson turned away 34 shots in his collegiate debut
and earned his first collegiate victory, while Bowden slipped to
1-5-0 in a 38-save effort for the Greyhounds.
Assumption hosts Saint Anselm at 6:35 p.m. on Wednesday. The
game will be played at the Charles J. Buffone Arena in Worcester,
Mass.
