Worcester, Mass. (November 28) -- Senior guard Gabrielle Gibson (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague) led all scorers with 26 points as No. 24 ranked Assumption held off New Haven for an 84-66 victory in Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday night at Laska Gym. This marks the first national ranking of the season for the Hounds after receiving votes in last week's USA Today Sports Division II National Poll.
Assumption jumped out to a 15-9 lead with 13:15 left in the first half after a free throw from Shannon Ray (Yonkers, N.Y./Ursuline Academy) before the Chargers answered with a 4-0 run and force a Greyhound timeout. With 8:09 on the clock in the first, New Haven seized its first lead of the game at 16-15 on a free throw from Lauren Hebert.
With the game tied at 18-18 moments later, the Hounds put together a 15-0 run to seize the 33-18 lead with 2:33 left in the half. Assumption took a 33-24 lead into the halftime break as both teams struggled from the field.
New Haven cut the lead down to four points at 38-34 in the early going in the second, but the Hounds answered to stretch the lead back into double digits at 49-38 following a three from Tafanie Roye (New Britain, Conn./Central Magnet Prep) with 13:06 remaining. Assumption led by at least seven points the rest of the way to come away with the eventual 18-point win.
Gibson led all scorers with 24 points, along with 13 points from Roye and 11 from Ray. Anh-Dao Tran led four Chargers in double figures with a 15-point outing.
The Hounds improve to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the Northeast-10, while New Haven falls to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the league.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, December 1st as the Hounds travel to Adelphi University for a Northeast-10 Conference game beginning at 1:30 p.m. in Garden City, N.Y.
