Box Score Worcester, Mass. (February 8) -- Assumption used a 22-3 second-half run to blow the game open as the Hounds pulled away for an 83-51 win over New Haven on Wednesday night in Laska Gym . With the win, the Hounds are now 16-6 overall and 13-5 in Northeast-10 play and have swept the regular-season series from the Chargers. New Haven has now lost 14 straight to fall to 2-20 overall and 2-16 in the league.
Assumption is receiving votes in this week's USA Today/ESPN Division II National Top 25 Coaches Poll. Prior to the start of the game, junior Gabrielle Gibson (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague) was honored for surpassing the 1,000-point plateau in a home win over Le Moyne on February 4. Gibson is the 21st player in Assumption women's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point mark.
The Hounds led by a 37-31 margin at the halftime break before the Chargers cut the lead down to three at 39-36 with 18:25 left in the game. Over the next 10 minutes, the Hounds held the Chargers to just one field goal to take control and lead 61-39 with 8:38 left. The lead swelled to as many as 35 points late in the game before the Hounds came away with the 32-point victory.
Junior guard Katy Howard (Medway, Mass./Medway) led the Hounds with 17 points behind five three-pointers, while Gibson finished with 15 points and Tafanie Roye (New Britain, Conn./Capital Prep Magnet) added 12 off the bench.
Bria Moore led the visitors with a game-high 21-point effort to go along with 11 rebounds.
