Box Score Worcester, Mass. (September 12) -- Jumping out to a 2-0 lead midway thru the second half, the Assumption College field hockey team held off visiting Saint Anselm College by a 2-1 margin in a non-conference contest on Wednesday afternoon at the Multi-Sport Stadium. The win is the second straight for the Hounds with both wins coming at home.
Freshman Maria Beatrice (West Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) got the scoring going with her second goal in as many games to put the Hounds on top 1-0 just 12:25 into the game. The rest of the first half was relatively quiet with just five shots on goal the entire period.
In the second half, Saint Anselm came alive with nine shots on goal and 11 penalty corners. It was Assumption though that added to its lead as freshman Kiley Colucci (Gloucester, R.I./St. Mary Academy) found the back of the net with just under 18 minutes left in the second half.
The Hawks kept up the pressure though and just three minutes later, freshman Caitlin Morse scored off a rebound to cut the lead in half at 2-1. Assumption's defense held strong though as the Hounds knocked off the Hawks to improve to 10-8 all-time against Saint Anselm.
Sophomore Lauren Neilan (Mendon, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) made three saves in the win for Assumption, while senior Megan Sullivan turned aside six shots in the loss for Saint Anselm.
Assumption is now 2-4 overall on the season, while Saint Anselm drops to 1-4 overall. The Hounds are back in action on Saturday, September 15th as the team travels to Saint Michael's for a 3 p.m. start in Colchester, Vt.
