Football Falls in Last Minute to Bentley, 21-14

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. (September 14) -- Bentley sophomore Jeff Hill pulled down a 70-yard touchdown reception with 51 seconds remaining as the Falcons completed a rally from a 14-point deficit as Assumption dropped a 21-14 final to visiting Bentley on Friday night at the Multi-Sport Stadium.

The Hounds got off to a hot start and midway thru the first quarter, junior running back Matt Pedone (Holden, Mass./Wachusett) scrambled in from eight yards out for the 7-0 lead as the Hounds put together a 10-play, 58-yard scoring drive. Assumption added a second score as junior tight end Scott Simonson (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) pulled down a 15-yard pass from junior Bobby Jordan (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) in the corner of the end zone to jump out to a 14-0 edge.

Assumption held the 14-0 halftime lead and a large advantage in total offense, but it was Bentley that quickly answered with a pair of big plays to start the third quarter. The Falcons got things started on a 35-yard touchdown reception by Jon Wilkie just 3:23 into the quarter, followed by a 48-yard scoring strike from Dan Guadagnoli to Bill Kiley to tie the game up at 14-14 less than five minutes into the period.

The Hounds had two chances to take the lead back on field goal attempts, but both were wide from junior kicker Tad Beuchert (Danvers, Mass./St. John's Prep). One came midway thru the third quarter and went wide right, followed by a 31-yard attempt early in the fourth that went wide left.

Bentley put the dagger in late in the game as Hill pulled in a pass in stride down the far sideline around the 30 yard line and outran the Assumption defense for the game-winning score.

Jordan completed 24-of-41 passes for 227 yards and one touchdown, while Simonson had seven receptions for 98 yards and a touchdown. Pedone led the rushing attack with 56 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown.

Junior Mike Bates (Holden, Mass./Wachusett) led the defense with seven tackles in the loss, including a pair of sacks.

Guadagnoli completed 22 passes for 344 yards and three touchdowns, while Hill had eight catches for 146 yards for the Falcons. Hill now has six touchdown receptions this season, all of at least 33 yards.

With the loss, Assumption drops to 1-2 overall and is at the .500 mark in the league at 1-1. Bentley remains unbeaten and is now 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Northeast-10. The Falcons rallied from a double-digit deficit for the second straight week to remain perfect.

Assumption is back in action on Saturday, September 22nd as the Hounds travel to Easton, Mass. to take on Stonehill College in a 6 p.m. start.
