Springfield, Mass. (January 15) -- Junior goaltender Bobby Bowden (Springfield, Mass. /
Williston-Northampton) posted a shutout as the Assumption College ice hockey team posted a 2-0 victory over Western New England University on Tuesday night.
After a scoreless first period, the Greyhounds used two second period goals to take control of the game. Jon Baldwin (Malden, Mass. / Saint Mary's) recorded the game-winning goal, his fourth of the season, with a marker at the 9:37 mark in the period. Sophomore Brennen Shaw (Presque Isle, Maine / Brewster) and freshman Alex Erban (Attleboro, Mass. / Mount Saint Charles) had helpers on the score. For Shaw, it was his team-high 11th assist of the season.
Junior Nick Mattiello (Johnston, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) added an insurance goal at the 16:38 mark in the second period off assists by Mike Heyde (Natick, Mass. / Natick) and Ben Kuzma (East Haven, Conn. / Worcester Academy).
That was all the help Bowden would need, as the junior turned away 38 shots to earn his second victory of the season as Assumption improves to 3-13-1 on the season. With the loss, Western New England University falls to 6-9-0.
The Greyhounds return to action on Saturday, January 19 as the team will travel to Manchester, N.H. to take on Southern New Hampshire University. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Ice Den.
