Manchester, N.H. (January 19) -- The Assumption College ice hockey defeated the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University, 3-2, in an overtime final on Saturday night.
Junior Kyle Zobler (Millbury, Mass. / New Hampton) netted the overtime winner on a redirect of a shot by senior captain Keven Meehan (Melrose, Mass. / Austin Prep). Meehan and Matt Calos (North Reading, Mass. / North Reading) were credited with assists on the goal which came at the 3:21 mark in the extra period. Zobler had a hand in all three Greyhound goals on the evening as he turned in a three-point night.
The Greyhounds jumped ahead 1-0 in the first period on a goal by Ross White (Uxbridge, Mass. / Uxbridge), his fourth of the season, off assists by Zobler and Meehan. The time of the goal was 15:14 in the first period.
Sophomore Brennen Shaw (Presque Isle, Maine / Brewster) extended the Greyhound lead to two with a power play goal off assists by Zobler and Brendan McDonough (Burlington, Mass. / Brooks). The tally came at the 11:34 mark in the second period.
The Penmen rallied back to tie the game with two unanswered goals. The first goal came at the 14:53 mark in the second period and the game-tying goal came at the 7:11 point in the third period, forcing overtime.
Junior goaltender Bobby Bowden (Springfield, Mass. / Williston-Northampton) made 43 saves to pick up his third victory of the season. Tyler Holske made 30 saves for the Penmen in the loss.
The Greyhounds improve to 4-13-1 on the season, while the Penmen fall to 2-12-2 on the season.
Assumption will return to action on Wednesday, January 23, against Stonehill College. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Easton, Mass.
