Worcester, Mass. (January 26) -- The Assumption College ice hockey team rallied to a 4-3
victory over the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University at the Buffone Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Greyhounds overcame a two-goal deficit heading into the final period and scored with 1:05 left in the game to come away with the win as junior forward Ross White (Uxbridge, Mass. / Uxbridge) notched a hat trick.
After a scoreless first period, the Ravens struck first with two goals in the first four minutes of the second period, before White got the Greyhounds on the board with his sixth marker of the season. Keven Meehan (Melrose, Mass. / Austin Prep) assisted the goal as the Greyhounds cut the lead to one with 14:09 to play in the second period.
Franklin Pierce added the next tally less than two minutes later, as Brendan McCarron put the Ravens back ahead by two. The score stayed 3-1 heading into the final period.
White added his seventh score of the season with 18:45 to play off assists by Kyle Zobler (Millbury, Mass. / New Hampton) and Mike Heyde (Natick, Mass. / Natick).
With 8:28 to play, the Greyhounds tied the score for the first time, as White made his hat trick off assists by Heyde and Meehan.
With the score tied at three, the teams battled over the final eight minutes, but the Greyhounds broke through with just over a minute remaining as Trevor Plante (Blackstone, Mass. / Mount Saint Charles) found the back of the net off assists by Heyde and White.
White completed a four-point day with the assist, while Heyde had three assists on the day. Meehan also had a multi-point day with two assists.
Assumption out shot Franklin Pierce by a 51-45 margin, as junior goaltender Bobby Bowden (Springfield, Mass. / Williston Northampton) made 42 saves to pick up his fourth win of the season. The Greyhounds improve to 5-14-1 on the season, while the Ravens fall to 4-10-2 on the season with the loss.
Assumption will return to play on Wednesday, January 30 at Franklin Pierce for the deciding game of the three-game season series. At the moment the series is tied at one, as the Ravens defeated Assumption 1-0 in their first meeting on the season. The game will begin at 7:30 p.m.
