Winchendon, Mass. (January 30) -- Senior Kyle Zobler (Millbury, Mass. / New
Hampton) hit the post as time expired in overtime as the Greyhounds tied the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University, 4-4, at the Jason Ritchie Arena on Wednesday night.
With the tie, the Greyhounds and Ravens split the season series and each will receive one point in the standing. The Greyhounds now have a chance to earn three total points with a win against Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday.
Senior Keven Meehan (Melrose, Mass. / Austin Prep) scored the first goal for the Greyhounds on the power play, giving Assumption a brief 1-0 lead at the 11:49 mark in the second period.
The Ravens answered with a goal of their own 21 seconds later as Michael Tallo found the back of the net to even the score.
Assumption put away a loose puck in front of the net to regain the lead as Ben Kuzma (East Haven, Conn. / Worcester Academy) took a puck at the point and beat the Raven goaltender off assists by Zobler and Mike Heyde (Natick, Mass. / Natick).
The goal came after the Raven goaltender saved a flurry of shots, but the Franklin Pierce defense failed to clear the puck out of their zone, resulting in the Greyhound goal.
After another Raven goal evened the score at two, Meehan broke out and scored a shorthanded goal to give the Greyhounds a 3-2 lead. Meehan's goal came just after the Greyhounds picked up a five-minute penalty for hitting from behind.
The Greyhounds successfully killed the penalty, but Franklin Pierce scored on the next shift, tying the score at three at the 13:41 mark in the third period.
The tie didn't last long as Zobler got into open ice and scored on a two-on-one, giving the Greyhounds a 4-3 lead with 5:40 to play in regulation.
Franklin Pierce answered back yet again as Roscoe Sweeney notched his fifth goal of the season with 3:07 to play, tying the game for the final time.
Junior goaltender Bobby Bowden (Springfield, Mass. / Williston Northampton) turned away 35 shots in the game, while Pat Dunn made 30 saves for the Ravens. The Greyhounds went 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Ravens were 0-for-5.
Assumption is now 5-14-2, while Franklin Pierce is now 4-10-3. The Greyhounds return to action on Saturday, February 2 at 7:35 p.m. against Southern New Hampshire University. Proceeds from the game will benefit the "Wounded Warriors Project." Prior to the game, the Assumption College ice hockey program will be holding its annual Alumni Game.
