Burlington, Vt. (January 5) -- The Assumption College ice hockey team dropped a 5-2 final to Becker College on Saturday evening, despite being locked up in a 2-2 tie in the third period at
the DoubleTree Ice Hockey Classic hosted by Saint Michael's College.
Junior goaltender Bobby Bowden (Springfield, Mass. / Williston Northampton) made 37 saves in the loss, while Gregg Hussey made 32 saves in the win.
Assumption was hurt by two power play goals in first period and trailed by one, 2-1, at the first intermission. Sophomore Brennen Shaw (Presque Isle, Maine / Brewster) had the lone goal for Assumption in the period at the 16:35 mark off an assist by sophomore Trevor Plante (Blackstone, Mass. / Mount St. Charles). Overall for the game, Assumption went 1-for-3 with the man advantage, while Becker went 2-for-6.
After a scoreless second period, the Greyhounds knotted up the score at two just over a minute into the final period as Ross White (Uxbridge, Mass. / Uxbridge) put away a power play goal off an assist by Keven Meehan (Melrose, Mass. / Austin Prep). The time of the goal was 1:21 into the the third period.
Becker added three unanswered goals over the final 16 minutes of action to take the 5-2 victory. The Hawks also won the shot tally by a slim 14-13 margin in the final period.
Assumption falls to 2-11-1 on the season with the loss while Becker improves to 6-6 on the season with the victory. The Greyhounds will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 6 at 4:00 p.m. to take on Saint Michael's College on day two of the DoubleTree Ice Hockey Classic.
