Newport, R.I. (January 9) -- The Assumption College ice hockey team dropped a 6-3 final to
Salve Regina University at the Abbey Ice Rink on Wednesday night. The Greyhounds fall to 2-13-1 on the season, while Salve Regina improves to 5-9-1.
Assumption trailed 5-1 after two periods, but scored the first two goals of the final frame to cut the lead to two, 5-3, with 8:47 remaining in the game. The Greyhounds couldn't get any closer, as Salve Regina added one more goal for the final margin.
Jon Baldwin (Malden, Mass. / Saint Mary's), Nick Mattiello (Johnston, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken), and Trevor Plante (Blackstone, Mass. / Mount St. Charles) each scored goals for the Greyhounds in the loss. Baldwin got the scoring started for Assumption in the first period off an assist by Matt Calos (North Reading, Mass. / North Reading) at the 10:55 mark in the first period.
After a scoreless second period for the Greyhounds, Mattiello scored an unassisted power play goal, before Plante added his fourth goal of the season off assists from Keven Meehan (Melrose, Mass. / Austin Prep) and Ross White (Uxbridge, Mass. / Uxbridge). Meehan ranks second on the team with nine assists on the season.
The Greyhounds return to action on Jan. 15 at Western New England University. The game will begin at 7:45 in Springfield, Mass.
