Box Score Worcester, Mass. (October 23) -- Behind a pair of second-half goals and a steady offensive attack, the Assumption College field hockey team picked up its first Northeast-10 victory of the season with a 2-1 win over visiting American International College on a blustery Wednesday night at the Multi-Sport Stadium.
The Hounds came out strong early on and had a number of solid scoring chances in the opening 20 minutes from junior Paige Anderson (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) that were turned aside by AIC netminder Kori Huffman. In a scoreless first half, the Hounds held a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal, including three from Anderson alone.
Assumption got on the board seven minutes into the second half as freshman standout Meghan Sullivan (Worcester, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) tallied her team-best seven goal of the season for the 1-0 lead. Senior Bethany Rocha (Lakeville, Mass./Bishop Stang) picked off an AIC pass and crossed the ball to Sullivan, who tipped in the pass for the goal. The Hounds added to the lead with just over 18 minutes left as freshman Katie Lombardozzi (Bolton, Mass./Nashoba Regional) tipped in a long pass from sophomore Sarah Frahm (Salem, N.H./Salem) from just outside the circle for her second goal of the season.
The Yellow Jackets cut the lead in half at the 10:58 mark as Jenna Masionis took advantage of an opportunity just in front of the Assumption net and got off an uncontested shot for her 12th goal of the season.
Assumption held a 12-3 edge in shots on goal in the game and outshot the Yellow Jackets by a 22-7 margin overall.
Senior goalie Heather Philbrick (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunkport) made two saves for the Hounds in the win, while Huffman mades 10 stops for the Yellow Jackets.
With the win, Assumption improves to 5-10 overall and 1-6 in Northeast-10 play, while the Yellow Jackets drop below .500 at 7-8 overall and 2-5 in the league.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, October 26th as the Hounds play host to Franklin Pierce University for a Noon start.
