Football Rolls To Third Straight Victory

Box Score

Pleasantville, N.Y. (October 26) -- On Saturday afternoon, the Assumption College football team ran its winning streak to three straight with a convincing 55-21 victory over Pace University in Northeast-10 Conference action at Pace Field.

The teams were tied at 14-14 midway thru the second quarter before 34 unanswered points helped Assumption run away with its fourth road victory of the season. The win is the fifth straight in the all-time series for Assumption.

After a turnover on downs to start the game for the Hounds, junior defensive end Derrick Mann (Sharon, Mass./Sharon) forced a turnover on the next play as he tipped a Pace pass and pulled it down for the interception to give the Hounds the ball at the Pace 37-yard line. Assumption's Tad Beuchert (Danvers, Mass./St. John's Prep) attempted a 45-yard field goal at the end of the drive, which had the distance but was just wide right to keep the game scoreless.

Pace answered though as Delaney Wallace scored on a two-yard touchdown plunge up the middle with 7:53 left in the first for a 7-7 score.

The Hounds came right back though and got the ball into Pace territory on the following possession behind a 36-yard pass to senior All-American Scott Simonson (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South). Senior Bobby Jordan (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) capped off the drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to freshman DonQuale Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Williston-Northampton), who pulled the pass in at the three-yard line before faking a Pace defender and tallying his first career touchdown.

Assumption took its first lead of the game in the opening minutes of the second quarter as Simonson pulled down a 12-yard touchdown pass from Jordan over the top for a 14-7 edge, capping a 64-yard drive for the Hounds.

Wallace tied the game for the Setters just six minutes into the second quarter as he launched himself over the pile from one yard out  for his second TD of the day to make it a 14-14 score. On the ensuing Assumption drive, the Hounds took advantage of 45 yards of penalties by Pace to get the visitors down into the red zone for a third time in the game. Junior Matt Heriveaux (Everett, Mass./Malden Catholic) capitalized on the Setter miscues as he dodged his way thru a number of defenders from 11 yards out to put the Hounds back in front by a 21-14 margin with 6:33 left in the first half.

Beuchert continued the first-half scoring with 2:57 left in the second quarter as he converted a 20-yard field goal for his ninth field goal of the year and a 24-14 Assumption lead. On the following kickoff, freshman Charles Reid (Westhampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) forced a Pace fumble at the 20-yard line to give the ball back to the Hounds. Assumption turned that possession into three points as well as Beuchert drilled a 30-yard field goal with two minutes left for the 27-14 halftime edge.

The Hounds elevated their play from the outset in the second half with an onside kick from graduate student Ali Mourtada (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro), which Assumption turned into seven points as Jordan ran it in from three yards out for the 34-14 lead. Simonson continued the scoring for the Hounds with 4:11 left in the third quarter as Simonson pulled in a 20-yard touchdown in the back corner of the end zone to increase the lead to four possessions at 41-14.

Junior Sean Mayo (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) came into the game to start the fourth for the Hounds as he found senior Sam Previte (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) from four yards out for the 48-14 lead. Pace, stuck on 14 points since the second quarter, ended a stretch of 34 unanswered points by the Hounds with 8:29 left as Cameron Davis pulled down an 11-yard touchdown pass from Brian Beeker.

Assumption closed out the scoring with 4:47 left as junior De'Ontray Johnson (San Diego, Calif./Hoover) scored on a 14-yard touchdown run to cap a seven-play, 52-yard drive for the 55-21 final.

The Hounds piled up 207 yards on the ground, led by 66 yards from senior Matt Pedone (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional). Jordan was 16-of-24 passing for 239 yards and three touchdowns, while Simonson had four catches for a career-high 99 yards and two touchdowns. In the red zone, the Hounds were an efficient 9-for-11 overall in the game, including a perfect 5-for-5 in the first half.

Defensively, the Hounds had nine players with at least three tackles in a balanced effort, led by a six-tackle effort from senior Raheem Kelly-Reid (Springfield, Mass./Chicopee). Assumption also posted nine tackles for loss and five pass breakups on the day.

For the Setters, Beeker led the offense with 121 passing yards as the Hounds outgained Pace by a 474-244 margin in yards of total offense. Defensively, Joe Roman led the team with 10 tackles as the Hounds dominated the time of possession by over seven minutes.

With the win, Assumption improves to 5-3 overall and 5-2 in the Northeast-10, while Pace remains winless at 0-8 overall and 0-7 in the league.

Assumption is back in action on Saturday, November 2nd as the Hounds play host to Merrimack for a 1 p.m. start at the Multi-Sport Stadium. Prior to the start of the game, the Assumption College football senior class will be honored for their contributions to the program during their careers.
