Worcester, Mass. (November 1) -- The Assumption College men's soccer team defeated Saint Michael's College by a 3-0 final on senior day on Friday afternoon at the Multi-Sport Stadium. Senior Jose Paulo (Sao Paulo, Brazil / LaSalle Academy) netted two goals for Assumption.
Prior to the game, Assumption honored its senior class for their contributions to the program. The five seniors honored were Paulo, Champion Slye (Southbridge, Va. / Word of Life Christian), Max Roche (Medway, Mass. / Medway), Lucas Spina (Holliston, Mass. / Holliston), and Michael Agbortoko (Buea, Cameroon / Southbridge).
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Troy Lamagna (South Glastonbury, Conn. / Glastonbury), the eventual game-winner, off a put back of a blast by Alex Parisi (Methuen, Mass. / Central Catholic). Parisi just missed netting his own goal as the attempt ricocheted off the post to Lamagna, who gave the Greyhounds a one-goal advantage.
Paulo extended the lead to two in the 38th minute with his own hooking shot over the out-stretched hands of the Purple Knight keeper, beating him to the upper right side of the net. The senior scored off a second assist by Parisi, who fed him the ball from 15 yards out, leading to the score.
Paulo added his second goal of the game in the 58th minute on an unassisted tally for the 3-0 final.
Assumption won its final three games to close the season and finished the season at 5-8-2 overall and has a 3-8-2 record in Northeast-10 Conference play while Saint Michael's falls to 5-10-0 and sits at 5-8-0 in league play.
