West Haven, Conn. (November 16) -- On Saturday afternoon, the Assumption College football team wrapped up the 2013 season with a 27-17 road loss at the University of New Haven as part of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship Weekend. The Hounds were the No. 4 seeded team, while the Chargers held the No. 3 seed. Assumption finishes the season at 6-5 overall, marking the sixth winning season for the program in the varsity era.
New Haven closes out the season at 8-3 overall.
After empty drives for both teams to open the game, the Hounds used a 28-yard rush from senior quarterback Bobby Jordan (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) to get the visitors into New Haven territory. The Chargers also had a 15-yard face mask penalty on the play, giving the Hounds a first down at the New Haven 31-yard line. The drive ended just minutes later as senior Matt Pedone (Holden, Mass./Wachusett) scored on a touchdown up the middle from 20 yards out for the early 7-0 lead with 6:10 left in the first.
New Haven answered with 2:37 remaining in the opening quarter as Anthony Tillman scored from three yards out to tie the game at 7-7. The Chargers had gotten the ball down to the two-yard line on a long completion to Courtney Moshood, but a 15-yard taunting penalty pushed the ball back to the 17 before New Haven managed to score on the rush by Tillman. Tillman cut right and met the Assumption defense, but cut back to the left and got just inside the left pylon for the score.
Assumption came right back though as the first quarter came to an end as junior Matt Heriveaux (Everett, Mass./Malden Catholic) rushed for 13 yards on a draw play to get the Hounds down to the New Haven 16-yard line. On the second play of the second quarter, Pedone scored from 10 yards out on a third-and-four play to regain the lead at 14-7 following the eight-play drive.
After a New Haven turnover and downs and an Assumption three-and-out, New Haven got the ball back and converted that possession into points as freshman Brian Roberts kicked a 25-yard field goal to make it a 14-10 margin with 3:49 left in the opening half. Assumption closed out the first-half scoring with a field goal of its own with just 52 seconds left as senior Tad Beuchert (Danvers, Mass./St. John's Prep) kicked a 46-yarder to make it a 17-10 halftime margin in favor of the Hounds. The field goal was the league-leading 15th of the season for Beuchert, the reigning Northeast-10 Special Teams Player of the Week.
In a slow-moving third quarter, the Chargers cut the lead down to 17-13 with 5:18 left in the period as Roberts drilled a season-best 40-yard field goal from the right hash mark. New Haven took its first lead of the game with 10:04 remaining in the fourth as senior quarterback Ronnie Nelson found Moshood in the back of the end zone from 35 yards out for the 20-17 advantage.
New Haven took advantage of a bobbled Assumption snap on a punt attempt and took over at the Assumption six with 8:39 left in the fourth quarter. The Chargers turned that into a touchdown on the next play as Nelson found Nick Music on the right side as he dove into the end zone just inside the right pylon for the 27-17 lead.
Pedone led the Hounds offensively with 79 yards on the ground and a pair of touchdowns as the senior finished 2013 with 917 rushing yards. Jordan completed 14 passes for 117 yards, while senior Evan Butters (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) caught two passes for 42 yards.
Defensively, sophomore Kendall Dardy-Jones (Dorchester, Mass./St. Sebastian's School) led the Hounds with nine total tackles, while senior Mike Bates (Holden, Mass./Wachusett) posted five tackles to end the season with a team-leading 96 total stops.
