Westfield, Mass. (November 5) -- The Assumption College ice hockey team used two goals in each of the first two period to earn a 4-3 victory over Westfield State University at the Amelia Park Arena on Tuesday evening.
Sophomore Brandon Bete (Greenfield, Mass. / Northfield Mount Hermon) and senior Nick Mattiello (Johnston, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) got the Greyhounds going with markers in the first period as the Greyhounds jumped out to a two-goal advantage. Mattiello and senior Ross White (Uxbridge, Mass. / Uxbridge) assisted Bete's goal while Ryan Sargent (Concord, N.H. / Prospect Mountain) and Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J. / Wayne Valley) had helpers on Mattiello's tally.
Vince Perreault cut the Greyhound lead in half with a first period goal before Dave O'Connor evened the score with the opening goal of the second period.
The Greyhounds stormed back following O'Connor's goal as Assumption took advantage of a Westfield game misconduct penalty midway through the second stanza to score two power play goals from Joe Arcieri (Newmarket, N.H. / St. Thomas Aquinas) and Alex Erban (Attleboro, Mass. / Mount Saint Charles) to take a 4-2 lead. Senior Kyle Zobler (Millbury, Mass. / New Hampton) had an assist on each goal while fellow senior Mike Heyde (Natick, Mass. / Natick) had the second-assist on Arcieri's goal at the 10:24 mark in the second period and Mattiello added his second assist of the game on Erban's score.
Goaltender Bobby Bowden (Springfield, Mass. / Williston-Northampton) made 39 saves in the win for the Greyhounds while Ian Perrier made 22 saves in the loss for Westfield.
The Greyhounds improve to 1-1 on the season with the win while Westfield State falls to 0-2 on the season with the loss.
