Winchendon, Mass. (November 9) -- Sophomore Brandon Bete (Greenfield, Mass. / Northfield Mount Hermon) netted the game-tying goal with 0.3 seconds left in regulation as the Greyhounds tied Franklin Pierce University. Trailing 3-1 late in the third period, Assumption rebounded with a pair of goals with an extra attacker to tie the Ravens, 3-3, in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for each team on Saturday night.
With the Assumption goaltender pulled, Bete took a loose puck in front of the net to score the equalizer, as the Greyhounds were able to capitalize on a six-on-five advantage to send the game to overtime.
Assumption got on the board first as Brennen Shaw (Presque Isle, Maine / Brewster Academy) put away his first goal of the season off an assist by junior defenseman Matt Dalton (Medway, Mass. / Catholic Memorial). Shaw scored the tally at the 12:38 mark in first period, giving Assumption the early advantage after one period.
The Ravens roared back with three-straight goals, including two even-strength tallies in the second period. Sean Dunn leveled the score at the seven-minute mark in the period Ilester Little gave the Ravens a 2-1 advantage with just over a minute to go in the period.
Tim Sullivan continued the run for the Ravens, scoring at the 2:23 mark in the third period to give Franklin Pierce a two-goal advantage at 3-1.
The Greyhounds were able to defend the power play early in the third period, killing off two Raven attempts, but senior goaltender Bobby Bowden (Springfield, Mass. / Williston-Northampton) took a 10-minute misconduct with 13:32 remaining in regulation and did not return to the game.
Senior Ross White (Uxbridge, Mass. / Uxbridge) brought Assumption within one on a power play goal off assists by Joe Arcieri (Newmarket, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) and Mike Heyde (Natick, Mass. / Natick). The time of the goal was at the 13:48 mark in the third period.
Now within reach, the Greyhounds put the pressure on following a roughing penalty by Dunn. The Greyhounds pulled their goaltender with 1:02 remaining in regulation, giving Assumption a six-on-four advantage.
The Ravens killed the power play with four seconds to play in the final period, but Bete was able to control the puck to put in his first goal of the season to even the score at three.
Bowden made 29 saves for Assumption and sophomore Chris Hemhauser (Old Saybrook, Conn. / Worcester Academy) turned away all three shots he faced in relief to earn the tie while Dave O'Brien made 27 saves for the Ravens.
The Greyhounds move to 1-1-1 on the season with the tie and are 0-0-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play while the Ravens are now 0-3-1 on the season and are also 0-0-1 in league play.
Assumption is back in action on November 13th at Stonehill College. The Northeast-10 Conference game will begin at 7 p.m.
