Auburn, Mass. (December 1) -- The Assumption College ice hockey team dropped a 5-3 final to Nichols College in the 2013 Worcester City Shootout championship game on Sunday evening.
The Greyhounds jumped out to an early lead with two first period goals as Nick Mattiello (Johnston, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) and Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J. / Wayne Valley) each scored a first period marker.
Mattiello gave the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead with a tally at 7:10 in the first period with Gomez assisting on the goal before Nichols leveled the score at 1-1 three minutes later.
Gomez gave the Greyhounds the lead back off an assist by Mattiello at 17:27 in the first period and Assumption led the Bison 2-1 after one.
Nichols scored twice in the second period to grab the lead with goals at 12:23 and 16:18 in the period. The first goal was a shorthanded tally before the Bison grabbed the lead with a power play goal.
The Bison added their third-consecutive goal in the third period after the Greyhounds killed off a five-minute major penalty, giving Nichols a 4-2 lead.
Senior Kyle Zobler (Millbury, Mass. / New Hampton) cut the deficit to one, 4-3, with his first goal of the season at 4:53 in the third period off an assist by Ross White (Uxbridge, Mass. / Uxbridge) but the Greyhounds couldn't draw any closer as Nichols added a power play goal for the 5-3 final.
Gomez and Brandon Bete (Greenfield, Mass. / Northfield Mount Hermon) earned all-tournament honors for their play during the two-day tournament. Gomez had two goals and two assists in the tournament while Bete scored two goals in the tournament for Assumption.
Assumption falls to 2-6-1 on the season with the loss while Nichols improves to 6-1-1 with the win.
The Greyhounds are back in action on December 4th at Saint Anselm College. The game will begin at 7 p.m. in Manchester, N.H.
