Worcester, Mass. (February 11) -- The Assumption College ice hockey team withstood a late
Fitchburg State University flurry to pick up a 7-5 victory over the Falcons at the Charles J. Buffone Arena on Monday night.
Line mates Dave Maiocco (Medford, Mass. / Arlington Catholic) and Ken Pia (Guilford, Conn. / Xavier) each had three-point nights for the Greyhounds in the win. Maiocco had a goal and two assists, while Pia had three assists on the evening.
The Greyhounds trailed 3-1 after one period, with Maiocco providing the lone goal for Assumption in the period.
Assumption rallied with three second-period goals to take a 4-3 lead at the second intermission. Senior Dave D'Amico (Johnston, R.I. / LaSalle Academy) started the scoring with a marker at the 3:50 mark in the second period.
Junior Garrett Lessard (East Sandwich, Mass. / Sandwich) evened the score with his first goal of the season at the 7:22 mark in the period, before Mike Heyde (Natick, Mass. / Natick) put the Greyhounds ahead for the first time in the game with six seconds to play in the period.
Sophomore Jared Vona (West Seneca, N.Y. / Saint Francis Prep) gave the Greyhounds a two-goal lead, 5-3, with the opening goal of the third period less than three minutes into the final frame. Junior Nick Mattiello (Johnston, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) and Jon Baldwin (Malden, Mass. / Saint Mary's) had assists on the goal.
The Falcons answered with back-to-back goals in just over two minutes to even the score at five with 16 minutes to play in the game.
Sophomore Trevor Plante (Blackstone, Mass. / Mt. St. Charles) notched the game-winning goal at the 14:21 mark in the final period, before Mattiello added an empty-net goal with 26 seconds to play to provide the final margin.
Junior Bobby Bowden (Springfield, Mass. / Williston-Northampton) made 40 saves in the win as the Greyhounds improve to 6-15-2 on the season. With the loss, the Falcons fall to 9-11-2 on the season.
Assumption will be back in action on Tuesday, February 12 against Worcester State University at the Horgan Rink in Auburn, Mass. The game will begin at 5:30 p.m.
