Box Score Worcester, Mass. (September 11) -- In the 2013 home opener on a sweltering Wednesday night, the Assumption College field hockey team dropped a 2-1 final to visiting Adelphi University in non-conference play at the Multi-Sport Stadium.
Sophomore Kiley Colucci (Gloucester, R.I./St. Mary Academy) got the Hounds on the board early as she put home a rebound at the 10:40 mark for her first goal of the season as she scored from just under 10 yards out. She now leads the team with five points thru three games.
Adelphi answered back though with a pair of goals in a span of 2:20 as Mary Plotas tied the game with her second goal of the season. Off a rebound following a dramatic save from Assumption goalie Heather Philbrick (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk), Plotas put home the equalizer at 24:23 to tie it at 1-1. The Panthers tallied the eventual game winner moments later on the first goal of the season from freshman Lena Pollich.
In the second half, the Hounds outshot the Panthers by a 12-2 margin, but a number of shots were getting knocked down by the Adelphi defenders before forcing the goalie to make a save. Colucci had 12 shots for the Hounds in the game, with five reaching the goalie. Penalty corners were 11-8 in favor of Adelphi, with the Hounds holding a 5-2 edge in the second stanza.
Philbrick made nine saves in the loss for Assumption, while Adelphi goalie Kelly Serrao turned aside eight chances for the victory.
With the loss, the Hounds sit at 1-2, while Adelphi is back even at 1-1 overall.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, September 14th as the Hounds travel to Franklin Pierce University for a non-conference game beginning at Noon.
