Football Knocks Off Bentley, 20-14

Box Score

Waltham, Mass. (September 13) -- Behind four forced turnovers and a pair of touchdown passes from senior quarterback Bobby Jordan (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell), the Assumption College football team picked up a 20-14 win at Bentley University on Friday night in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams. The win snaps a seven-game losing streak for the Hounds vs. Bentley dating back to 2006 and is the first victory at Assumption for first-year head coach Bob Chesney.

On the opening drive of the game, Assumption took the ball 81 yards in nine plays, capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass across the middle to senior Neil Harrington (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) to take a 7-0 edge just 2:56 into the game. On the ensuing kickoff, the Hounds forced a fumble on the return but were unable to capitalize as a field goal attempt soared just wide.

The game stayed that way thru the remainder of the first period before Bentley struck in the second with a three-yard touchdown pass from Dan Guadagnoli to Chad Calvanese to tie the game with 9:12 on the clock.

The Falcons extended their lead to 14-7 with 1:28 left in the opening half as Chris Walsh hauled in a 15-yard over the shoulder touchdown catch in the corner of the end zone. Assumption wasn't done though as senior kicker Tad Beuchert (Danvers, Mass./St. John's Prep) converted a 34-yard field goal as time expired in the quarter to pull the Hounds within 14-10 at the break.

On the opening kickoff of the second half, the Hounds forced a second Bentley fumbled and turned that into points as Beuchert knocked in a 39-yard field goal to get the visitors within one at 14-13 just 1:28 into the second half. Assumption took the lead for good late in the third period as Jordan found junior Eddy Frazier (Worcester, Mass./Burncoat) down the far sideline for a 42-yard strike and the 20-14 lead. Frazier caught the ball over a defender near the 10-yard line, spun and made his way into the end zone for the score.

Jordan finished 14-for-31 for 183 yards and two touchdowns, while Frazier led the team with four catches for 93 yards. Assumption gained 112 yards on the ground, led by 71 yards from senior Matt Pedone (Holden, Mass./Wachusett).

Defensively, the Hounds were led by eight tackles each from seniors Erik Abramson (Deerfield, Mass./Frontier Regional), Mike Bates (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) and Matt Colangelo (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell).

Guadagnoli finished with 259 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Jeff Hill posted five catches for 76 yards for the Falcons.

With the win, Assumption evens its record at 1-1 overall and improves to 1-0 in the Northeast-10, while Bentley drops to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the league.

Assumption is back in action on Friday, September 20th as the Hounds host Stonehill College for their home opener beginning at 7 p.m. at the Multi-Sport Stadium.
