Boston, Mass. (January 18) -- Behind a dominating performance by freshman Nick Commesso (Marshfield, Mass. / Governors Academy), the Greyhounds tied Wentworth Institute of Technology, 3-3, at the Walter Brown Arena on Saturday evening. Commesso made 58 saves for Assumption, a tie for the 10th highest save total in a single game for Assumption.

The Greyhounds had the first chance to jump ahead, as Assumption gained a five-on-three advantage as Wentworth took penalties at 12:20 and 13 minutes into the first period. Seconds after the first penalty expired, Assumption took the lead on a power play goal by junior Joe Arcieri (Newmarket, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas). Senior Ross White (Uxbridge, Mass. / Uxbridge) and sophomore Alex Erban (Attleboro, Mass. / Mount Saint Charles) assisted the go-ahead goal at 14:25 in the opening period.

Assumption would give the Leopards a short chance at tying the score later in the period as senior Nick Mattiello (Johnston, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) took a boarding penalty at 16:40. The Greyhounds were helped out as Wentworth picked up a boarding call of its own 26 seconds later to end the power play chance.

The Greyhounds found themselves with the first man-advantage of the second period as Connor Crowe took a tripping penalty at 6:22 in the period, but Leopards killed off the penalty. Assumption would strike 37 seconds after the penalty, as Erban gave the Greyhounds a 2-0 lead at 8:59 in the second period. Senior Kyle Zobler (Millbury, Mass. / New Hampton) assisted the goal.

Assumption extended its lead to three at 14:25 in the second period as freshman Paul Amarone (Hamden, Conn. / Trinity Pauling) scored his third goal of the season off assists by line mates Brennen Shaw (Presque Isle, Maine / Brewster Academy) and Trevor Plante (Blackstone, Mass. / Mount Saint Charles).

The Leopards roared back after Assumption's third goal, starting when Lawton McCracken took a pass from Joe Mottiqua at 15:35 to get Wentworth on the board. Devin Smith added a second period goal to draw the Leopards within one at 19:20, tightening the game before the second intermission.

Wentworth got its first power play of the final period after defenseman Matt Dalton (Medway, Mass. / Catholic Memorial) took a hooking penalty at 15:35 in the third, but the Greyhounds killed the penalty to hang on to the one-goal advantage.

The Leopards got the equalizer with 13 seconds to play in regulation as Andrew Yarber scored to force overtime after Wentworth had pulled its goaltender.

Assumption was outshot 61-21 in the contest, as Commesso's 58 saves overshadowed a combined 18 saves for Wentworth goaltenders. Joel Miller made 11 saves while allowed all three goals for the Leopards before giving way to Alex Peck, who made seven saves without allowing a goal over his 30 minutes of action.

The Greyhounds move to 3-10-2 on the season with the tie while the Leopards are now 4-10-2. Assumption is back in action on Sunday, January 19th as the Greyhounds will play host to Nichols College.
