Worcester, Mass. (January 22) -- The Assumption College ice hockey team dropped a 3-0 final to Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference action at Charles J. Buffone Arena on Wednesday evening. The Greyhounds dominated the faceoff circle and freshman Nick Commesso (Marshfield, Mass. / Governor's Academy) made 42 saves in the loss.
Stonehill got its first chance to take the lead on the power play as freshman Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J. / Wayne Valley) took a penalty with 7:54 to play in the first period. Assumption killed off the penalty with ease, keeping the game scoreless after one period. Commesso made 20 saves while not allowing a goal in the first period.
The Skyhawks got on the board first as Kevin Aufiero put away an even strength goal at 5:37 in the second period. Garrett White and Scott Rolph had assists on the go-ahead goal.
Stonehill extended the lead to two as White added a
power play goal following as Nick Mattiello (Johnston, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) took a roughing penalty. The goal came at 12:27 in the second period as Rolph and Brendan Greene added assists on the goal.
The Greyhounds got their first chance on the power play as Kevin Airoldi took a cross checking penalty at 4:05 in the third period. After the Skyhawks killed off the penalty, Stonehill extended the lead to three as Auriero notched his second goal of the contest at 6:24 in the final period. Bryan Rooney and Richard Harris had assists on the final goal.
Commesso finished with 42 saves in the contest while allowing three goals and junior Chris Tasiopoulos made 29 saves in his fourth shutout of the season. After being outshot 20-4 in the first period, Assumption rebounded to outshoot Stonehill by a 25-22 margin over the final two periods.
The Greyhounds had a commanding 45-30 lead in face offs, as sophomore Alex Erban (Attleboro, Mass. / Mount Saint Charles) was an impressive 14-of-18 on face offs. Sophomore Brandon Bete (Greenfield, Mass. / Northfield Mount Hermon) was 14-of-22 in the circle, while junior Jared Vona (West Seneca, N.Y. / Saint Francis Prep) five-of-eight.
The two conference teams played a fairly clean game with only three combined penalties for six minutes. The Greyhounds went 0-for-1 for on the power play while Stonehill was 1-for-2 with the man advantage.
Assumption falls to 3-12-2 with the loss and is now 0-5-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play while Stonehill improves to 10-9-0 and is still unbeaten at 5-0-0 in the league.
The Greyhounds are back in action on Saturday, January 25th against Franklin Pierce University. The game will begin at 7:35 p.m. at Charles J. Buffone Arena in Worcester, Mass.
