Worcester, Mass. (January 25) -- The Assumption College ice hockey team dropped a 6-4 final to Franklin Pierce University at Charles J. Buffone Arena on Saturday evening. With the loss, the Greyhounds drop the season series to the Ravens by a 0-2-1 final.

The Ravens jumped ahead early in the first period, capitalizing on a charging penalty 21 seconds into the contest as Aaron Blaker scored a power play contest at the 40-second mark in the period. Tim Sullivan and Alex Schleper had assists on the goal with the man advantage.

Franklin Pierce carried a 2-0 lead into the first intermission as Kyle Craig scored for the Ravens at 19:04 in the period. Sullivan added his second assist of the period and Brett Oldaker had the second assist on the tally.

The Ravens extended the lead to three on their second power play goal of the contest as Sullivan capitalized on a Greyhound hooking penalty to give FPU the three-goal advantage. Sullivan recorded the goal at 2:51 in the second period as Oldaker and Blaker provided helpers.

Assumption started to come back after the Ravens took two penalties, giving Assumption a five-on-three power play. Seconds after the first penalty expired senior Kyle Zobler (Millbury, Mass. / New Hampton) brought the Greyhounds within two with his fourth goal of the season. Junior Ben Kuzma (East Haven, Conn. / Worcester Academy) and sophomore Alex Erban (Attleboro, Mass. / Mount Saint Charles) assisted the first goal for Assumption. The goal came at 5:50 in the period.

The teams killed off a combined three penalties before Michael Marchionda extended the Raven lead back to three off an assist by Michael Geib with 12:29 to play in the second period.

After that tally, the Greyhounds roared back scoring two goals in a span of 58 seconds to draw within one heading into the final period. Senior Ross White (Uxbury, Mass. / Uxbury) got the comeback started with his fourth goal of the season. Erban and Zobler had assists on the even-strength goal at 13:12 in the period.

Junior Trevor Plante (Blackstone, Mass. / Mount Saint Charles) continued the rally with his second goal of the season off an assist by fellow junior Brennen Shaw (Presque Isle, Maine / Brewster Academy), his sixth assist of the season.

The Greyhounds got a chance to even the score as Assumption earned a power play at 18:49 in the second period, but the Ravens were able to kill it off and maintain the advantage heading into the final frame.

With the goals coming early and often, Blaker added his second goal of the contest at 2:19 in the final period off an assist by Alex Schleper. That goal marked the eventual game-winner as it gave FPU a 5-3 lead.

The third period got very chippy as the teams combined for seven penalties before Assumption took advantage of a tripping call against the Ravens to draw back within one 4:33 to play in regulation. Sophomore Brandon Bete (Greenfield, Mass. / Northfield Mount Hermon) scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season. Freshman Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J. / Wayne Valley) and Plante assisted the power play score.

Assumption had one last chance as the Ravens took a boarding penalty at 18:28 in the final period, giving Assumption a man-advantage. The Greyhounds then pulled their goaltender with 50 seconds to play, creating a six-on-four, and after a flurry of shots with 30 seconds to play, the Ravens took advantage of the Greyhounds empty net for a 6-4 final.

Freshman Nick Commesso (Marshfield, Mass. / Governor's Academy) made 34 saves in the loss for the Greyhounds while senior Dave O'Brien made 39 saves to earn the win for the Ravens. Overall, Assumption outshot the Ravens by a 43-40 margin.

The teams combined for 19 power plays as Assumption went 2-for-11 with the man advantage while the Ravens were only 2-of-8 with an extra attacker.

The Greyhounds fall to 2-13-2 on the season with the loss and now sit at 0-5-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play while the Ravens improve to 4-12-1 overall and are 2-3-1 in league play.

The Greyhounds will play host to Saint Michael's College on Tuesday, January 28th. The game will begin at 6:05 p.m. at Charles J. Buffone Arena in Worcester, Mass.
