Worcester, Mass. (January 28) -- The Assumption College ice hockey team dropped a 4-1 final to Saint Michael's College at Charles J. Buffone Arena on Tuesday evening. The Purple Knights scored three times in the final period to run away with a closely contested Northeast-10 Conference game.
With the loss, the Greyhounds drop the season series to Saint Michael's College in the lone meeting this season.
Sophomore Chris Hemhauser (Old Saybrook, Conn. / Worcester Academy) made 68 saves in the loss, tying the second-highest save total in school history. The sophomore netminder made 24 saves in the first and third periods while turning away 20 shots in the second period.
The Purple Knights had the first crack on the power play in the first period as Assumption senior forward Garrett Lessard (East Sandwich, Mass. / Sandwich) took a two-minute boarding penalty at 7:40. The Greyhounds ably killed off the penalty as Hemhauser turned away shot attempt after shot attempt to preserve the scoreless tie after one period.
Later in the period the teams took matching penalties as senior Kyle Zobler (Millbury, Mass. / New Hampton) took a tripping infraction while Anthony Maiuri took an embellishment penalty for the Purple Knights.
After Zobler took his second penalty of the game to start the second period, a hooking
penalty at 49 seconds, the Greyhounds took the first lead of the game as freshman Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J. / Wayne Valley) took a pass across the crease from junior Brennen Shaw (Presque Isle, Maine / Brewster Academy) and finished for his fifth goal of the season. The goal came at 5:01 in the second period.
Saint Michael's answered the bell, capitalizing on another Assumption penalty to get its first marker of the contest, a power play goal by Kevin Altidor at 8:00 in the second. Stephen Inman and Dannis Divis assisted the game-tying marker.
Assumption had its first power play chance of the game as Mark Higgins took a tripping penalty at 10:20 in the second, but the Purple Knights were able to withstand the Assumption attack with the man-advantage and the score went into the third period tied at one.
The Purple Knights took the lead for the first time in the game as Kevin Lampron score an unassisted goal at 6:34 coming out of the second intermission.
After the Greyhounds killed off their third penalty at 10:48 in the third, the Purple Knights extended the lead to two goals as Josh Diskman put away his sixth score of the season at 14:37. Divis added his second assist of the contest on that goal and ranks second on SMC with 12 helpers.
The Purple Knights added the final score of the game on their second power play goal of the game as Jeremy Wong took advantage of an Assumption slashing penalty for the final margin at 16:03.
Overall Saint Michael's went 2-for-5 with the extra attacker while Assumption was 0-for-1 on the power play.
The Purple Knights out shot Assumption 72-31 in the contest as Hemhauser had a career night. He falls to 0-3-1 on the season with the loss while Dave Donzanti made 30 saves to earn the win and improve to 2-10-1 for SMC.
The Greyhounds fall to 3-14-2 with the loss, while Saint Michael's improves to 3-14-1 with the win.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, February 1st at Southern New Hampshire University. The game will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Manchester, N.H.
