Worcester, Mass. (October 12) -- Led by a balanced scoring attack, the Assumption College field hockey team defeated visiting Dowling College by a 5-1 final in a non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon at the Multi-Sport Stadium. The win is the team's fifth in its last six games and marks the final non-conference game of the regular season for Assumption.
Assumption jumped on the board at the 16:55 mark as freshman Belle Ives (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) picked off an errant Dowling pass for the 1-0 lead. At the top of the circle, Ives intercepted a Golden Lion turnover, played the ball in and unleashed a backhanded shot for her second goal of the season. The Hounds added to that lead just 1:33 later as junior Kiley Colucci (Gloucester, R.I./St. Mary) scored her team-best seventh goal of the season while falling to the turf for the 2-0 lead.
Freshman Allison Sheahan (Higganum, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth), the team's leading rookie scorer, tallied her fifth goal of the season with just over 15 minutes left in the opening half as the Hounds took the 3-0 lead into the halftime break. Assumption held an 11-2 edge in shots on goal in the opening 35 minutes and a 7-1 advantage in penalty corners.
Just 3:11 into the second half, junior Sarah Frahm (Salem, N.H./Salem) found senior Paige Anderson (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) just inside the circle as Anderson blasted in her second goal of the season for the 4-0 advantage.
Dowling got on the board at the 52:50 mark on a goal from Martina Tinnirello as she fired in a shot from just inside the circle to make it a 4-1 game as the score was assisted on by Sarah Shams-Kollar.
Assumption capped off the scoring though with 7:16 remaining to account for the 5-1 final as junior Taylor Chase (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) tallied her third goal of the season. Chase started the play with the penalty corner out to sophomore Andrea Koslowski (Warren, Mass./Quaboag Regional), who passed it back in to Chase for the score from just to the left of the net.
Senior goalie Lauren Neilan (Mendon, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) made one save in the win, while Ariana Ovadia stopped 12 shots while picking up the loss.
