Albany, N.Y. (October 14) -- The Assumption College men's soccer team played to a 3-3 draw with Saint Rose on the road on Tuesday afternoon after coming back from an early 2-0 deficit in the first half. Senior captain Kieran Hillery (Smithfield, R.I. / Smithfield) scored two goals for the Hounds, including the final goal of the match just four seconds before the clock expired to force overtime.
The Hounds are now 2-7-2 on the season (2-4-2 NE-10) while Saint Rose is 1-9-2 overall, 1-6-1 in the NE-10.
The Golden Knights jumped out to a quick lead, notching the first goal of the match just over 11 minutes into the first half. Saint Rose added its second goal at the 23:55 minute mark, sending the squads to the locker room with the Hounds down 2-0.
In the beginning of the second period, the two teams put up evenly-fought battles, rendering no change on the scoreboard until just over 17 minutes remained on the clock.
At the 72:57 mark, the Hound offense exploded, sparked by a free kick from junior Nemanja Kaurin (South Portland, Maine / South Portland). Kaurin found Hillery who headed the ball into the back of the net to bring Assumption within one.
With the Hounds still down 2-1, it was sophomore Zach Scafati (Franklin, Mass. / Franklin) who stepped up to tie the match in the 82nd minute. Scafati, assisted by senior Matt Flynn (East Falmouth, Mass. / Falmouth), notched a well-placed header for the equalizer.
Saint Rose responded less than a minute later with another go-ahead goal off of a loose ball approximately 30 yards from the goal. The ball found its way past Hound goalie Dana King (Windham, Maine / Windham) and into the lower left side of the net to once again put Assumption down by one.
It looked as if the match would go into the books for the Golden Knights until, just four seconds before the regulation clock expired, Hillery notched his second goal of the game, third of the season, to tie the match again.
The two squads played 20 minutes of scoreless overtime in which the teams each posted two shots while the Hounds held the edge in overtime corner kicks, 3-1.
Overall, the Golden Knights posted 17 shots, four on goal, while Assumption tallied 14 shots, seven on goal. Hillery, along with co-captain Troy Lamagna (South Glastonbury, Conn. / Glastonbury), led the Hound offense with two shots on goal.
Defensively, Saint Rose's goalie posted four saves on the day, compared to just one for King in 110 minutes in net.
Assumption is set to return to action on Saturday, Oct. 18, as the team travels to #1 Southern New Hampshire University for a 7 p.m. match-up.
