West Haven, Conn. (October 28) -- The Assumption College men's soccer team picked up its third Northeast-10 Conference win on Tuesday, earning a 4-1 victory over the New Haven Chargers on the road. Four Greyhounds scored in the second half for the comeback win, sparked by freshman Dillon Foley (Natick, Mass. / Natick) who notched his second goal in as many games.
With the win, the Hounds improve to 3-10-2 overall (3-7-2 NE-10), while the Chargers drop to 2-14-0 (1-11-0 NE-10) on the season.
New Haven got out to an early lead on the Hounds just 10 minutes into the first period when a Charger shot was blocked then rebounded by New Haven's Sal DiTommasso for the follow-up goal.
The two squads were scoreless throughout the remainder of first period and Assumption went into the locker room at the half down by one, 1-0.
Foley's score came just 2:46 into the second half. The freshman took a pass from sophomore Sarandon Dias (Swansea, Mass. / Bishop Stang) down the right side of the field and beat the New Haven goalie to the far corner of the net. Foley's goal prevented the shutout, tied the match and fueled an impressive run by the Hounds.
Just three minutes later, senior Troy Lamagna (South Glastonbury, Conn. / Glastonbury) scored his third goal of the season on a penalty kick. Lamagna lined up and shot into the lower left corner for the lead and the ultimate game-winner. The goal marks Lamagna's second game-winning goal on the season, the third of his career.
For 20 minutes, the Chargers attempted to tie up the match but at the 70-minute mark, sophomore Ethan Morrow (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Hyde) blasted a shot from 25 yards out for an insurance goal, putting Assumption up 3-1.
Just over one minute later, the Greyhounds struck a fourth time, this time after a failed New Haven clear left the ball in Charger territory. Sophomore Matt Gilson (Cumberland, R.I. / Mount Saint Charles Academy) capitalized on the situation, sending an accurate shot from 20 yards out into the net for the final tally of the match.
Junior goalkeeper Dana King (Windham, Maine / Windham) registered six saves in the match compared to four for the Chargers.
Assumption outshot New Haven 8-6 in the first half but the Chargers managed 13 to the Hounds' 10 in the second period. The Greyhounds did, however, emerge with the advantage in corner kicks 5-2.
The Greyhounds have just one more game left on their 2014 slate. Assumption will travel to Saint Michael's on Friday, Oct. 31, for a 3 p.m. contest.
