Worcester, Mass. (October 29) -- In Northeast-10 Conference play on a rainy Wednesday night, the Assumption College field hockey team pulled away for a 6-1 victory over visiting Southern Connecticut at the Multi-Sport Stadium. The win is the fifth in the last six games for the Hounds, who are ranked fifth in the latest NCAA East Region rankings.
The Hounds got on the board with 19:14 left in the first half as freshman Allison Sheahan (Higganum, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) tallied her sixth goal of the season for the 1-0 edge. Sheahan played the ball forward towards SCSU goalie Audrey Dolloff, who had the ball get thru her pads to her left. Sheahan dove towards the goal to get her stick on the ball for the one-goal edge.
Junior Kiley Colucci (Gloucester, R.I./St. Mary Academy) added to the lead with 11:07 left, putting home a rebound after a shot from Sheahan for the 2-0 lead. Junior Sarah Frahm (Salem, N.H./Salem) made it a 3-0 game just 1:01 later, followed by goals from Sheahan and freshman Belle Ives (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) for the 5-0 lead. Sheahan scored on a tight angle from right along the end line, while Ives took the goalie one-on-one for her third goal of the season.
Assumption owned a 15-1 advantage in shots in the first half, while penalty corners were even at four each.
With 16:38 left in the game, the Hounds extended the lead out to 6-0 as junior Kayla Quinn (Sutton, Mass./Holy Name) tallied her first goal at Assumption. Quinn, who transferred from Southern Connecticut, took a pass from Colucci for the score.
SCSU closed out the scoring with 2:46 left as Kristi Montemurro tallied her team-leading fifth goal of the season to account for the 6-1 final. The play began off a penalty corner started by Montemurro, who took the pass from Whitney Dyer.
Senior Lauren Neilan (Mendon, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) made four saves in the win, while Dolloff turned aside 13 shots in the loss.
Overall, Assumption outshot SCSU by a 23-8 margin, while the Owls held the 10-8 edge in penalty corners.
With the win, Assumption improves to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in Northeast-10 play, while Southern Connecticut falls to 2-11 on the season and is winless at 0-6 in the league.
Assumption is back in action on Friday, October 31st as the Hounds host Merrimack College for a 7 p.m. start.
