No. 9 Hounds Topple No. 7 Adelphi in 3-2 OT Final

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. (November 12) -- Freshman Allison Sheahan (Higganum, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) scored with 6:04 left in the first overtime to lift No. 9 Assumption to a 3-2 win over No. 7 Adelphi in Northeast-10 field hockey action on Wednesday night. The win clinches a berth in the 2014 Northeast-10 Conference Tournament for the Hounds, the program's first since the 2002 season.

Assumption is currently ranked ninth in this week's NFHCA Division II National Poll and fourth in this week's NCAA East Region rankings.

The Hounds took the early 1-0 lead at the 15:56 mark as junior Kiley Colucci (Gloucester, R.I./St. Mary Academy) scored off a rebound for her 13th goal of the season. Sophomore Andrea Koslowski (Warren, Mass./Quaboag Regional) fired in a shot from just inside the circle that was saved before Colucci dove to get her stick on the ball for the shot. Senior Paige Anderson (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) tallied her fourth goal in the last two games early on in the second half, increasing the advantage to 2-0 as junior Sarah Frahm (Salem, N.H./Salem) picked up the assist.

Adelphi amped up the offensive pressure as the Panthers faced the two-goal deficit, getting on the board just under 13 minutes into the second period. Junior Olivia Nowokunski cut the lead in half with the unassisted tally, putting home a rebound for the 2-1 margin. The Panthers kept up the intensity and converted a penalty corner opportunity into the equalizer with just 8:16 remaining in regulation. Junior Molly Cuevas fired in a shot from just inside the circle and thru traffic, slamming the back of the net for the 2-2 tie game.

With 11 minutes left in the first overtime, Adelphi's Kristen Bagley got off a solid shot on an offensive rush, but senior goalie Lauren Neilan (Mendon, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) made a terrific diving stop to keep the game going.

The Hounds picked up the game winner with 6:04 left in the extra period as Sheahan got her stick on the loose ball and poked it in for her ninth goal of the season and the 3-2 home win. Earning the assist on the play was Colucci.

Assumption held a 17-15 advantage in total shots, while shots on goal were even at 12 each. The Hounds also limited Adelphi to just four penalty corners, holding a commanding 13-4 edge in that category.

Neilan made nine saves in the game as she picked up the win, while Amanda Garguilo had eight stops in the loss.

With the win, Assumption improves to 12-5 overall and 7-3 in Northeast-10 play, while Adelphi drops to 12-5 overall and 7-3 in the league.

Assumption is now a perfect 7-0 at home vs. Northeast-10 opponents this season and 4-1 vs. nationally-ranked opponents in 2014. The team's 12 wins is the fourth-highest single-season total in program history and the highest since the 1998 season.

Assumption closes out the regular season on Saturday, November 15th as the Hounds host Stonehill for a Noon start. Prior to the start of the game, the Hounds will honor this year's Senior Class for their contributions and dedication to the program during their Assumption careers.
