Worcester, Mass. (November 15) -- On a blustery Senior Day on Saturday afternoon, No. 9 ranked Assumption dropped a 1-0 final to No. 5 Stonehill in Northeast-10 field hockey action at the Multi-Sport Stadium. Prior to the start of the game, Assumption recognized seven members of the team that were appearing in their final regular-season home game of their careers.
With 18:55 left in the first half, Stonehill had a scoring chance as Erika Kelly came in from the right side, firing a shot that was saved by Assumption goalie Lauren Neilan (Mendon, Mass./Nipmuc Regional). Neilan came out of the net to play the ball, picking up her lone save of the first half. Assumption's Allison Sheahan (Higganum, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) had the best scoring chance for the Hounds in the opening period as she let loose a shot from five yards out that was saved by Elizabeth Genovese for Stonehill.
The Skyhawks got on the board with just 3:29 remaining in the half, converting a penalty corner into the 11th goal of the year by Lauren Giordano. Sarah Morse got the play started on the penalty corner, passing to Emily Sideris at the top of the circle. Sideris fired the shot in from the top of the circle, which was tipped by Giordano for the 1-0 advantage.
In the period, Assumption owned a 6-2 edge in shots on goal, but the Skyhawks had a 7-2 advantage in penalty corner opportunities.
Stonehill had a chance with just under 22 minutes left in the second as Alexandria Sylvia received a pass up the middle of the field. Knocking the ball away though was Assumption senior Allie Richard (Fitchburg, Mass./Leominster) as she took possession just inside the circle. The Hounds had an opportunity of their own with 14:40 remaining as freshman Catie Laraway (Westfield, Mass./Williston-Northampton) got a shot off from the right side that was saved by Genovese. Creating the possession was sophomore Andrea Koslowski (Warren, Mass./Quaboag Regional), who played the ball in from midfield before finding Laraway up the left side.
The Hounds were unable to net the equalizer though, dropping their first Northeast-10 home game of the season.
For the game, the Hounds held a 15-12 advantage in shots, including an 11-6 edge in shots on goal. Assumption also held the Skyhawks with a penalty corner in the second period.
Neilan had five saves for the Hounds in the loss, while Genovese turned aside 11 shots in the victory.
Assumption completes the regular season at 12-6 overall and 7-4 in Northeast-10 play, while Stonehill improves to 15-3 overall and 9-2 in the league. Both teams advance to the Northeast-10 Tournament, with the field being announced this weekend. First-round play begins on Tuesday night.
