Pawtucket, R.I. (November 25) -- The Assumption College men's ice hockey team fell by a score of 5-2 to non-conference opponent Johnson & Wales on Tuesday night. Senior Trevor Plante (Blackstone, Mass. / Mt. St. Charles) and freshman Brian Farrell (Island Park, N.Y. / West Boca) scored the Hounds' two goals in the contest.
The loss marks the first time this season that the Hounds have lost by more than one goal. Assumption is now 1-6 overall while Johnson & Wales improves to 5-2.
The Wildcats took the lead just eight minutes into the first period when Ben Brouillard collected a loose puck in front of the net and put a shot into the top corner.
The Hounds responded just three seconds before the end of the period with the game-tying goal, off the stick of Plante. The goal, which was assisted by senior captain Brennen Shaw (Presque Isle, Maine / Brewster Academy) and junior Alex Erban (Attleboro, Mass. / Mount Saint Charles) marks Plante's fourth of the season.
With the score board tied after the first period, it was the Wildcats that got out in front again midway through the second. Alan Boozer was the only player to find the back of the net in the second period, sending the squads into the third with Assumption down one.
In just the third minute of the third period, Farrell notched another equalizer for the Hounds, assisted by sophomore Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J. / Wayne Valley) and freshman Brian Pickett (Wilmington, Mass. / Wilmington).
The tie was short-lived, however, as Johnson & Wales scored the eventual game-winner just over two minutes later, followed by two more to seal the win.
Overall, the Hounds outshot the Wildcats 33-32, including a significant 16-7 advantage in the third period, while winning 25 faceoffs. Defensively, Greyhound goalie Chris Hemhauser (Old Saybrook, Conn. / Glastonbury High School) tallied 27 saves. The NE-10 Weekly Honor Roll recipient spent all 60 minutes between the pipes.
Assumption is set to return to action on Friday, Nov. 28 as they compete in the Worcester City Cup. The Hounds take on Nichols College at 4 p.m.
