Marlboro, Mass. (November 30) -- The Assumption College men's ice hockey team topped Worcester State in its final matchup in the Fourth Annual Worcester City Cup on Sunday evening by a score of 1-0 at the New England Sports Center. Sophomore Paul Amarone (Hamden, Conn. / Trinity-Pauling) tallied the Hounds' only goal midway through the first period for the early Assumption lead.
The win is the second of the season for the Hounds while Worcester State's record drops to 2-5-2 overall.
Amarone's goal 9:20 into the first period marks his second in as many games. His first score of the season came on Friday in Assumption's contest against Nichols College.
Amarone guided the puck past Lancer keeper Salvatore Tecci with the help of senior Brennen Shaw (Presque Isle, Maine / Brewster Academy) and junior Alex Erban (Attleboro, Mass. / Mount Saint Charles). The pass from Shaw marks the captain's fifth assist of the season, a team high.
Junior Chris Hemhauser (Old Saybrook, Conn. / Glastonbury High School) was named to the All-Tournament team for his impressive performance in net. After collecting 27 saves between the pipes on Sunday, Hemhauser earns his first shutout of the season and improves his 2014-15 record to 2-4-0.
In the last 54 seconds of the contest, Worcester State pulled Tecci from the net in favor of a six-on-five attack. Hemhauser held strong in the net to allow the Hounds to ultimately claim the victory, despite a 13-6 shot advantage by the Lancers in the third.
The Greyhounds (2-7, 1-3 NE-10) were outshot by the Lancers 27-21 but suffered just 16 penalty minutes to 28 for Worcester State.
The Hounds are set to return to action on Wednesday, Dec 3, as they host Saint Anselm at Buffone Arena for a Northeast-10 Conference matchup. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
