Springfield, Mass. (November 4) -- After a wild final 10 minutes of play, the Assumption College field hockey team dropped an eventual 3-2 road final at American International College on Tuesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action.
In a scoreless first half, Assumption held an 8-7 edge in shots, including four on goal, while also owning a 7-2 advantage in penalty corner opportunities. The teams remained scoreless until the 54:36 mark however when Assumption took a 1-0 lead on a goal from freshman Catie Laraway (Westfield, Mass./Williston-Northampton). Assisted on by junior Kiley Colucci (Gloucester, R.I./St. Mary Academy), the goal was the fifth of the season for the rookie.
The Yellow Jackets tied the game with 8:07 remaining as Meghan Largo knocked in a loose ball following a penalty corner opportunity for her first goal of the season and a tie game at 1-1. Less than a minute later, Jenna Masionis found the back of the net with her team-leading 15th goal of the season and it was the Yellow Jackets with the 2-1 edge.
That lead was short-lived though as Assumption senior captain Paige Anderson (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) tallied her fourth goal of the season with 5:05 remaining to tie the game yet again at 2-2. Assisting on that goal was junior Sarah Frahm (Salem, N.H./Salem), who is now tied for the team lead with six assists for the season.
AIC capped off a crazy stretch of scoring though with 4:02 left on the clock as Shea Homer scored her second goal of the season, off an assist by Kaylin Harbin, for the eventual 3-2 victory.
The pace swung in the direction of the Yellow Jackets in the second half as AIC held a 15-11 advantage in shots and an 8-1 edge in penalty corner chances. Both categories ended up in AIC's favor for the game too with shots sitting at 22-19 and corners at 10-8.
Senior goalie Lauren Neilan (Mendon, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) made 10 saves in the loss, while Ainslee Penfield stopped six shots while earning the win.
Assumption is now 10-5 overall and 5-3 in the Northeast-10 , while American International sits at 9-6 overall and 5-3 in league play.
The Hounds are back in action on Friday, November 7th as the team travels to Franklin Pierce University for a 4 p.m. start in Rindge, N.H.
