Ice Hockey Stretches Win Streak to Four

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. (December 7) -- The Assumption College men's ice hockey team stretched its win streak to four on Sunday following a 3-2 victory over Becker College at Buffone Arena. Greyhound junior Alex Erban (Attleboro, Mass. / Mount Saint Charles) notched the first goal of the game just four minutes into the matchup to take the early lead.

With the win, Assumption improves to 5-7 overall while Becker falls to 3-8 on the season.

Early goals have ultimately led the Hounds to victories in their last three games and Sunday proved to be no different as Erban notched his sixth goal of the season in just the fourth minute of play. He charged the net, unassisted, to put the Hounds up 1-0 and set the momentum.

Just six minutes later, Assumption increased the lead to two on quick shot from senior Brennen Shaw (Presque Isle, Maine / Brewster Academy). Shaw was assisted by freshman Matt Cowles (Farmington, Conn. / Avon Old Farms) on the play, posting his fourth assist of his career.

The Hounds continued their offensive dominance when, just 2:44 into the second period, sophomore Stephen Picard (Enfield, Conn. / Loomis Chaffee) found his way past Becker's Tyler Stepke to give Assumption a commanding 3-0 lead. Picard was assisted by junior Pat Trainor (Auburn, Mass. / Auburn) and sophomore Nick Fenuccio (Keene, N.H. / Keene) on the play.

With just over 12 minutes left on the clock, Assumption held a 3-0 lead and a significant advantage in shots over the Hawks. It was, however, at the 7:31 mark in the third period that the momentum started to turn. Becker's Fred Hein took advantage of a power play opportunity to put the Hawks on the board and reduce the deficit to two, sparking a Becker comeback attempt.

Becker added another to the board, cutting the deficit to just one, with less than three minutes left on the clock, threatening to tie the score just before the end of regulation. Junior Chris Hemhauser (Old Saybrook, Conn. / Glastonbury High School) held on in net for Assumption, turning away 17 shots in the third period alone to preserve the Greyhound victory. Hemhauser totaled 31 saves on the day en route to his fourth-straight win.

Assumption ultimately outshot the Hawks 38-33 while also emerging with a 44-31 advantage in faceoffs.

The Greyhounds are set to return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 10, for their last contest of 2014. Assumption will travel to Framingham State for a 7:40 p.m. start before resuming competition on Jan. 6 when it hosts Fitchburg State at 7:35 p.m. at Buffone Arena.
