Manchester, N.H. (February 1) -- The Assumption College ice hockey team dropped a 5-1 final to Southern New Hampshire University at the Ice Den on Saturday evening. The Penmen took advantage of two power play goals on the way to the win.
The Penmen got off to a strong start with the extra attacker, capitalizing on the first Greyhound penalty, a hook, at 3:24 in the first period. Steven Berry put away a power play goal at 4:51 to give the Penmen the first lead of the game.
Assumption had two chances on the power play as Kyle O'Connell took two penalties in the opening period for SNHU. First he took a hooking penalty at 6:11 before adding a holding penalty at 13:40 in the period. The Penmen was able to kill off each penalty to maintain the one-goal edge.
Coming out of the second power play, Jay Silvia extended the advantage for the Penmen with the eventual game-winning goal at 15:48 in the first period, an even strength goal off assists by Jim Gabrione and Zach Lubinski.
The Penmen struck again with two more goals in the second period as Jim O'Connor scored at 2:06 in the second before Lubinski added a goal for the Penmen at 5:27 to extend the lead to four.
The Greyhounds were able to limit the damage in
the period as Assumption took two penalties following the second Penmen goal of the period. Assumption was able to kill off both penalties before freshman Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J. / Wayne Valley) took a tripping penalty as time expired in the second.
The Penmen took advantage of that penalty as Sylvia added a power play goal, his second marker of the game, 33 seconds into the final frame.
Assumption responded, scoring on a five-on-three advantage as senior Nick Mattiello (Johnston, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) added his sixth goal of the season. The goal was an unassisted tally at 5:04 in the final period.
Each team had one more power play chance over the final 15 minutes of action, but the score remained unchanged on the way to a 5-1 final.
Freshman Nick Commesso (Marshfield, Mass. / Governor's Academy) made 32 saves in the loss for Assumption while Tyler Holske made 19 saves for the Penmen in the win.
Overall, Assumption went one-for-six on the power play while SNHU was able to go two-for-five with the extra attacker.
Assumption falls to 3-15-2 overall with the loss and now sits at 0-8-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play while SNHU improves to 13-6-1 overall and is 5-2 in league play.
The Greyhounds are back in action on Friday, February 7th against SUNY Canton. The game will begin at 5:35 pm at Charles J. Buffone Arena in Worcester, Mass.
