Foxboro, Mass. (February 20) -- In the 2013-2014 season finale, the Assumption College ice hockey team dropped a 6-2 final to regular-season champion Stonehill College on Thursday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Foxboro Sports Center.

The teams were even over the first 18:30 of the first period before Bryan Rooney struck for an even-strength goal for the 1-0 lead. Stonehill added another goal just 18 seconds off from Dan Graham, followed by a Will Baker score with just 18 seconds left in the period off a Graham assist for the 3-0 lead after one stanza. The Skyhawks held a convincing 20-9 edge in first-period shots.

In the second, Assumption freshman Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) scored just 1:13 into the period with an unassisted goal to get the Hounds on the board and cut the lead to 3-1. The goal was his seventh of the season as he finishes his rookie season with 14 points on seven goals and seven assists. Stonehill's Nate Soter answered just 53 seconds later however, along with a Bill Carey goal with 6:23 left in the second to extend the lead to 5-1 after two periods.

Skyhawk Kevin Aurifero got things going on the power play just 1:13 into the final period as he converted another assist from Graham to make it a 6-1 early in the third. Brandon Bete (Greenfield, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon) answered with a goal of his own for his team-leading 10th score of the season that was assisted from senior Garrett Lessard (East Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich).  Bete ends the season with 13 points on 10 goals and three assists, while Lessard ends his senior season with points in his final two games.

Stonehill held a 51-25 advantage in shots, with Assumption freshman netminder Nick Commesso (Marshfield, Mass./Governor's Academy) made 45 saves in the game. Commesso made 17 saves in both the first and third periods. For the Skyhawks, Patrick Farrington had a 23-save effort that was highlighted by 13 saves in the second period.

On the power play, the Hounds converted 1-of-3 attempts and the Skyhawks 1-of-5 chances.

With the loss, Assumption ends the season at 4-19-2 overall and 0-10-1 in Northeast-10 play, while Stonehill improves to 16-9 overall and finishes a perfect 11-0 in the league. The Skyhawks will host No. 4 seeded Saint Michael's College in the league's semifinals.
