Rindge, N.H. (February 8) -- On Saturday afternoon, the Assumption College women's basketball team dropped a 73-66 final to Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference divisional play as the teams split the regular-season series with the Ravens. The Hounds held the lead for most of the game and were tied at 66-66 with 1:50 left before dropping the seven-point final.
The Hounds jumped out to an early 14-4 lead after a jumper from senior Shannon Ray (Yonkers, N.Y./Ursuline Academy) and extended that edge to 18-4 on a layup from senior captain Jamie Insel (Clinton, N.J./Voorhees) with 13:37 left in the first half. Leading 20-8 nearing the midway point thru the first half, the Hounds embarked on an 11-4 run that was capped by a basket from junior Caitlin Ackerman (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South) to lead 31-12 with 7:05 remaining in the opening period. The Ravens put together a 17-5 run though as the hosts pulled to within 36-29 at the 1:57 mark remaining in the first and got within five before the Hounds took a 39-33 lead into the halftime margin in favor of Assumption.
The Hounds shot 50 percent from both the field and the Hounds in the first half, while the Ravens shot 34.4 percent from the field and 20 percent from three. The Ravens also held a commanding 22-13 edge on the glass.
The lead shrunk to three on a Dana Campbell triple as the shot clock went off and the Ravens tied the game moments later on a three from Brittany Martelle to knot things up at 41-41. A three-point play from Insel put the Hounds back in front and Assumption stretched the lead out to five after a hoop from Ackerman with 14:50 left in the game. The game was tied twice over the next 6:51, including at 48 and 54, after a free throw line jumper by Pierce's Natalie Bastian with 7:59 remaining.
Franklin Pierce took a one-point lead at the 6:09 mark as Kara Charette drilled a right-side shot off the glass as she was fouled and she hit the free throw for the 59-58 edge. With 3:49 remaining, Assumption senior Tafanie Roye (New Britain, Conn./Capital Magnet Prep) hit a corner three for the visitors to go up 64-61 and another Roye layup later tied the game up at 66-66 with just 1:50 left in the game. A corner three from Pierce's Dyamond Gardner put the Ravens in front for good with 1:10 remaining and the Ravens used four late free throws to clinch the victory.
Insel nearly posted a double-double with 16 points and a team-best nine rebounds, while Roye added 14 and Ray finished up with 12. The Hounds shot 39.1 percent from the field in the game but knocked down seven three-pointers.
The Ravens were paced by a 23-point effort from Charette to go along with 15 from Martelle and 12 Brooke Coderre. Jessica Hurd led Franklin Pierce with 11 rebounds as the Ravens held a 48-36 edge on the boards, including a 13-7 advantage on the offensive glass.
